Looking for a small chainsaw for camping
We love bush camping and camp fires and thought I'd buy a SMALL chainsaw for camping for my husband for Fathers Day in 2 weeks. We will be RESPONSIBLE chainsaw owners, cutting just enough for a small campfire. Any suggestions?

Are you planning on cutting "green"/living brush? It does not burn well and it is smokey. Are you camping where you are allowed to cut bush?

I work with a volunteer trail crew clearing trails in the National Forests and we use nothing but Stihl chainsaws. The USFS fire hotshot crews use them also. Very dependable and they have a full line from homeowner saws through farm and professional saws.

For camping I like a cordless reciprocating saw with a pruning blade.

Black and Decker makes a 18 volt chain saw that works well for small work. Just recharge the battery, and it's ready to go again.

Stihl or Huskvarna are top quality saws. Our Husky is 30 years old and still runs great and is a two pull starter.

I assumed everyone would know that green timber smokes. We camp on private properties where we are allowed to cut up fallen timber.

I would recommend a STIHL, based on my personal experience with them. Good equipment.

I'll throw in a vote for the smallest Echo. Bash me now. But it was a dependable saw and still is with it's new owner (i moved to a house that had no trees and did not need it any longer) Small, light weight and cranked every time. Affordable.

I vote with jagiven-- not as much noise & no chain to sharpen. I guess it all depends on the size of the wood. Larry

x2, we don't camp with with our reciprocating saw and pruning blade, but at home this works great! Never thought of taking it with us.

Stihl for me. Have had a couple of other brands in my 63 years, but none compares with the dependability of my 15 incher. It's at least 25 years old (not sure when I bought it), and still has all the original parts, including the chain. Gets sharpened once in a while, but that's it.

I tell you what.... Fire up a chainsaw at a camp site and SHERIFFs show up by the dozens...
For just cleaning up limbs and downed branches the battery operated type would be the best idea for me to use... I carry a BOW hand saw and large HD clipper. I wouldn't turn down a battery operated saw at all...
I agree in the chain saw world Stihl rocks for sure... This is what all the woods people uses everywhere...

From what I gather the OP is camping on private property not a CG so the gas chain saw would be OK in that event. I agree that if camping around others it would be a no no for sure.

You don't say where you're planning to use this chainsaw, but most campgrounds prohibit the operation of them. I'd suggest purchasing a good bow saw instead. That's what I use.

Then you assume wrong. I have seen people in parks breaking limbs off of live trees and they can't understand why the wood doesn't burn well. We have a 25 year old STIHL and it still runs great.
