Need info on mod to battery shelf on White Hawk

My 2014 White Hawk 30dsre came with a single group 24 battery. I want to add a 2nd battery and would like to switch to 2 - 6V batteries problem is they will not fit on the tongue shelf. I could fit a 2nd gr24 side by side, but even gr27's would be too long end to end. My thinking is to bolt a wider shelf made of treated material onto the existing shelf and place the larger batteries side by side rather than end to end. Would have to modify the plastic boxes to fit between the diamond plate on the nose and the back of the propane tank cover.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I couldn't find the previous thread. Anybody have experience on how to best accomplish this?

I saw another thread awhile back where someone installed a small pickup truck toolbox on the tongue. They moved the propane tanks forward right in back of the jack and put the box in back of the tank. I've been thinking of doing the same thing to our TT. I'm going to try and look for the thread. If I find it I'll post the link for you.

Well...I looked for quite awhile. I could not find that thread. I almost want to say the person who did the mod was either Doug or Roy Braddy. It's been at least a year or so since I saw it.

Looks like plenty of room on the tongue of your trailer to mount some batteries.

This is what alot of folks have done with their similar trailer setup. This 48-inch tool box will hold four each GC2 6VDC batteries is a lock box.

This is a couple of photos inside the 48-inch tool box showing vents and mounting of the GC2 6VDC battery

You can also just place some angle sections to fit your battery boxes and extend out over the top of your trailer tongue area.

Batteries need to be installed outside if possible so they can vent their poisonous fumes and drain directly to the ground if you boil out the battery fluids.

The downside however is you should make it as hard as you can to keep thieves from stealing your batteries. Batteries don't come cheap... If you make it hard to steal then the thief may go on to your neighbors easy picking batteries..

just some of my thoughts

Thanks, like both of your suggestions. Where can you get that truck box?

Added 2nd battery to our WhiteHawk 30DSQB....Had enough room after moving the first one over....both group 24....then got a 1 1/2" X 1/8" aluminum strip and made a locking strap to fit around boxes....added shut off switch too.

I also did the tool box mod for my battery. (got the idea from this site) and it works great. In the one of the photos you can see how I attached it to the trailer. I only have one battery and I use the box for my jack and other tools. Mine is a kobalt Brand from Lowes.

The lock box can be purchased from any of the auto parts stores I think - I saw one at Northern Tool - look alike.. AMAZON sells them also - They called 48-inch side mount tool box. They expensive however... $150 probably but sure look nice and have the latch lock instead of an easy to cutoff pad lock..

Even the lock shown above that goes around the battery and uses pad lock is easy to cut off but may slow them down a tad to make the difference... Apparently the drug guys need the battery acid. They also like the propane tanks so they can fill with ammonia for their drug business...

All of this goes down when the economy gets bad I guess... Even here in Northern Neck Virginia you hear this happening alot on the police scanners...

I spent $20 with a local welder who installed some basic angle iron between my propane tanks and diamond plate to create a tray to handle 4 batteries, side by side.

For you guys that are doing the twin 6V and placing them on the stock battery tray between the A-frame - is there any issue with the extra weight? I am concerned about overloading and possibly losing my investment. It looks like I can fit them side by side in there with about an inch to spare. Thoughts?

Below is a link to my (2) 6V Deep Cycle battery upgrade, no structural issues and works great. I did confirm with Jayco that my existing A-frame and battery cross-member supports would accommodate the two batteries.
