One good thing to do is to set your WIFI connection to "Metered", if it's on a data plan that has limited bandwidth. This will prevent Windows Update downloads (and some other bandwidth-consuming stuff).
While connected to the connection you want to set to "Metered", click/tap Start, open the Settings app. Click on the Network & Internet icon, select WIFI, and then click/tap on Advanced Options at the bottom. Enable the "Set as metered connection" option here. Windows will remember that setting for future use of the *current* WIFI connection only, so you need to do this whenever you connect to a different network.
