Onan generator coversion

Our North Point has an Onan 5500 watt Onan generator. It's located in the compartment under the overhang of the fifth wheel. The gas tank is located right next to it. My problem is that it is not possible to fill the gas tank without disconnecting the trailer from the vehicle. Trying to fill with a can is also problematic since the door to the compartment prevents the can from being tilted far enough. The dealer said that they don't sell the propane fueled model because of poor fuel efficiency. My thought is that since I have a residential refrigerator, I'm not using much propane for anything else. Additionally there is a compartment for a 3rd canister. Can the generator be converted to propane? And if so, would it be worthwhile? Opinions requested.

Thanks.

Jim

I have the same setup. Pulling, hauling and then reinstalling propane cylinders all the time is not much of a solution in my opinion.

Have not done so just yet but I am considering this for a solution.

I fill at gas stations with no problem, but I also have one of these just in case.

I think it will be pretty costly to swap out the fuel system, you not only need a new carb, but the gas valve solenoid and controls.

It is possible to fill the gas tank at the pump but the wife holding the door up and me cussin and stretching the hose into place without visibility of the top mounted level gauge and spillin gas. When it was all over the guy fillin up next to me said that looks difficult. Yea!

I have been using one of these Sierra pumps for years. I have a second one that the my ex uses to fill the John Deere since she has a hard time picking up 5 gallons of gas.

Works great.
