Replacement Tires for 165 Sport

Hey guys,
Searched through what I could find on tires here, but most were for 5ers and MH's.

I have a 165 Sport with 13" D-rated tires.

I would like to change to 14" tires if I have room. I have an email into jayco about this.

13" D-rated tires looks like they're good for 1610 lbs
14" C-rated tires look like they're good for 1760 lbs

So, either tire should work?
My GVWR = 3500 lbs single axel.

I am only finding 13" D-rated tires on eTrailer.com. Kenda Loadstar

They also have 14" tires C-rated, Kenda Loadstar

Anyone recommend Tire Discounters or other brick/mortar stores to buy wheels and tires for the TT?
I am not seeing D-rated tires on their website.

I may have to just take the trailer in and fit a 14" to see if they have enough clearance.

The best price I found for a new set of rims and tires for my TT (spring 2012) was at Discount Tire: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/home.do

As far as tire clearance, I know that dexter Axle recommends to RV manufactures to have 3" clearance top of tire to top of wheel well when under load. I recall that my TT when under load I have about a 2 3/4" clearance.

Not that familiar with 13" and 14" rims/tires, so can't offer any hands-on input.

Doug, let me know what Jayco says about 14" tires for the Sport165. If we can, that is sure better than 13". I have replaced my RV tires at Tucker Tires in Phoenix. They order them special.

I seen that post. I don't see a load rating when you select a tire?
Do you have to go to Carlisle website?

The closest store to me is about 25 miles.
Maybe I'll run the TT up there this Spring and see what they can mount.

My initial conversation with parts said since 14" wheels haven't been tested by the factory, they can not recommend them. They are going to have the technical staff give me a call. I'll let you know what I hear.

I did find this:
I have the Jayco 226 and I replaced the wheels with 14 inch and went to Radiel tires. They are C range but the load capacity is higher than the 13 inch tires...have towed about 5000 miles and have never had any problem at all, I think it is much safer and puts less strain on the tires....

Thank you for the inquiry. Jayco Inc. recommends that you replace the existing tires with the same original size tires. TIRE ST185/80D13 D- Range. If you decide to go with a larger tire you risk having a wheel well clearance issues which could result in a tire failure. Carlisle and Duro tires are brand names that sell this tire size. I have attached a schematic of the axle specifications per your request via phone message. Have a good day.

Doug,

If you're worries about fender well-to-clearance, the difference in overall outside diameter on the two size tire you stated above, are 2.2"(<2-1/4"). This will place the 14" tires 1-1/8" closer to the fender wells than the 13" tires.

I seen that on the tire calculator. Mines in storage, so I'll have to wait until April 1 to measure :-(
If I think it will clear, I'll buy some and try it.

Just FYI, I recently ran across this formula for calculating mounted tire diameters. Example: For a 235/80 R16 tire. Take the tire width (235), multiply by the aspect ratio divided by 100 (80 divided by 100 = .80), then multiply by 2. Divide this total by 25.4, and lastly add the rim diameter in inches (16) to the total. Result is mounted tire diameter (30.8 inches).

Actual calculations: 235 X .80 X 2
------------- + 16 = 30.8 inches tire diameter.
25.4


Without removing your current tire, do the calculations on it, then on the new tire & rim you are considering, and you can determine if there is enough clearance or not. Hope this helps.

Ooops -for some reason (probably operator error) the computer did not post the formula in the same way I typed it in. So I'll try again.

235 X .80 X 2 = 376. 376 divided by 25.4 = 14.80 14.80 + 16 = 30.8 inches tire diameter.

Computer would not let me enter calculations using fractional notation, so this will have to do.

I know it's not the exact same trailer, but our X17Z came with 14's even though most come with 13's. I have no idea why, but their is plenty of clearance.

That is good to know. I would prefer having tires with a higher load capacity on my Z. I have Carlisle Radials on it now.

For what its worth Doug, I couldnt find anything local for a direct replacement 13" D rated tire. I ordered the same 13" Kenda Loadstars from e-trailer you stated above and very happy so far with them. I talked to my local Jayco dealer about going up in size (for more options) before ordering them but due to the minimal wheelwell clearance, low riding of the 165s and torsion flex needed on a weighted camper I kept the same 13" size as they strongly suggested.
