RV GPS Buyer

Am thinking about purchasing a RV GPS. We have a new Garmin for the car but was wondering if the RV type is worth the money.

I am towing a 26RLS with a gasser and a lot of the gas stations are not situated for this and quite a few of the truck stops are not kind to gassers.

If you are sold on these, what is the best one to get?

I have the Rand McNally with the 7" screen and find it very user friendly. It has both an "Auto" and "RV" mode, and lots of features for the RV'er.

I have the Garmin RV760LMT and am very happy with it. Similar to Rustic Eagle's, it has a 7" screen and Auto and RV modes. My only "dislike" is the trip planing software which isn't the most intuitive.

I bought the TomTom 5" RV GPS from Amazon this summer and just completed an 8400 km trip to the East Coast with it. The 5" screen was perfect and did not look too big on the dash. Also the unit did not have too many functions so it was easy to use and navigate while driving. Best $200 I spent. Also add the bean bag mount which fits perfect on my F150 dash.

I dont know if any of them will tell you if a fuel station is RV friendly.. I always try to stop at a FlyingJ or similar truck stop.. Most will even let you overnight in the back lot.

Dumb question... How does an RV specific GPS benefit you? Does it just make sure you don't use roads with clearance issues, or is there more to it?

I have a Garmin Dezl 560LMT. This is a "trucking" GPS which allows for entry of specific dimensions, weight and hazards.

Likes:

Dimension entry for road passage
Exit services button
Truck specific button for fueling, repairs and services
Can go between Truck, RV and Car
Campround button (new with recent upgrade)
traffic avoidance
Lane assitance with pictures
Free upgrades of maps
grade warnings

Dislikes:

Route planning software for laptop
dash pad base
search mode for certain specific places (phone is faster in finding address)
time to arrival!!

I also keep a truckers atlas with me for alternates and confirming the projected routes.

Overall I have been happy with the unit and have yet to hit a snag or bad route.

One thing I did notice is that all the overpasses in and around NY are now coming up much lower than last season as a result of road work on 95 through the GWB approaches. Every single one was 12'9" where this is a major traveled road with 1000's of rigs passing through hourly, all of which are at my height or higher.

Rand McNally with the 7" screen

We have upgraded from an old Garmin GPS for the car to the RV Rand McNally with the 7" screen. It pretty much has all the same features as the other RV GPS units on the market. The one feature that needs attention from the mfr is when you are driving and decide to take another route to get to the original destination, the GPS keeps trying to get you to turn around and go to the original selected route. We have tried to have it recalculate AUTO/MANUAL mode using the new route and it refuses to do it. Also, the processor is EXTREMELY slow. Other than that it does it job.

I like the features of the Rand McNally, but reviews I have seen are not that great. Expecially the fact that they want $180.00 extra for map upgrades. their

Just me, but I don't see any particular advantage to an RV specific GPS. If you have a smartphone, between the two you'll cover pretty much any info you desire. As far as clearance issues, probably not an issue with your TT, OP. I previously owned a fifth wheel that was 13' 6" at the bedroom AC and never had a problem with bridges. OTOH, low trees extending over the highway were a constant concern and sure weren't in any GPS database.
