Size of ground wire for 7 pin connector

Hi,

I just purchased my first pop-up and pick it up next week.

I have a honda odyssey that has the honda towing package with 4 pin connector, but I need 7 pin with brake controller for the pop-up (with electric brakes). I installed the brake controller and wiring with my brother (a licensed mechanic) this past weekend and everything seems to work fine in testing, but I have 2 questions.....

1) We cut the 4 pin connector off of the honda wiring harness to use those 4 wires in the 7 pin (many instructions on the web said to do this). The 7 pin wiring instructions says the ground wire (white) should be 10 AWG but the ground wire from the 4 pin connector is not 10 AWG (more like 12 or 14 I believe). Do I need to run a separate ground wire for the 7 pin connector that is 10 AWG or the OEM 4 pin ground wire is good enough?

2) I do NOT believe my new pup trailer has backup lights (still need to confirm). Can I just leave the aux centre wire on the 7 pin empty/unconnected? I don't even know where I would connect it on the odyssey.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Welcome to the forum!

1. It probably would be a good idea to run a "separate" 10 AWG ground wire to the 7 pin connector. The OEM wire is smaller because 2 tail lights and a couple of clearance lights don't draw that much current, the flat four isn't meant for electric brakes so Honda sized the wire accordingly. Electric brakes would draw more current so you would need a larger ground conductor. Make sure you attach your breakaway switch rip cord to the Ody.

2. You can leave the center pin open. You would have to splice it into the wire leading to one of the backup lights on the Ody if you wanted to use it. My 23B doesn't have backup lights and the wire is just stubbed off inside the coach.
