Spare tire

I picked up a nail in my tire, it held air long enough to get it home but got me thinking. I have the aluminum wheel package on my trailer and the spare is a steel rim. Will the lug nuts that come with the aluminum wheels work with the steel rim or am I going to have to go get some lug nuts for the spare? I have a 6 hour drive trip coming up so it would be a good idea to be prepared.

I would think that you should be OK. Threads should not cause problem. Take one of the lug nuts off and see if it seats into the hole on the spare tire. Have not had a TT or 5'er that had a problem with the spare. Always check the air pressure in the spare regularly. Bad to need it and find it does not have much air in it.

Good advice. If the hole pattern is the same you should be OK. They don't even deliver autos with alloy rim on the spare. The lug nuts should be interchangeable.

Usually the taper is different between a steel & an aluminum rim. I would buy a set of lugnuts for the steel rim as a cheap precaution.

x2 for comment by 82corvette. The seat angle is generally different on an aluminum versus steel rim. Why take a chance? Get the correct lug nuts for a steel rim.

Hmmmm.... You gonna make make me crawl under there? I know my car is the same lug nuts on the steel spare rim and the alum. wheels. Just swapped them for a flat this week. They may not be the same seat angle but they work fine for a trip to the tire store.

If you do a search you will find that it is the shape of the hole- Conical vs Spherical more so than the type material. If there is a question I would get answers before the fact. Usually the mfg will not mix the 2 on a vehicle cause who carries a extra set of nuts?

I know I had to get different lugs for my van when we put on winter tires with steel rims. I sholud have tried it when it was off. The alloy lugs are also closed end so they can only be wound down so far. Spare tire isn't much good if you can't put it on.
