Spare Tire Maintenance

I was checking tire pressures for a recent trip and when I was underneath checking the spare, the pressure was down to 20psi, air was escaping as I tried to detach the locking inflator. So I pulled on the valve and could easily manipulate it and allow air to escape. I took the tire to my local repair shop and had the valve replaced today.
Just thought I'd mention it as an item to pay attention to. The rest of the tires were still at 63 psi. In run them at 65psi.

Good point, because many folks tend to ignore the spare tire especially when it's out-of-site. Mine is on my TT's rear bumper and I do check for proper PSI spring/fall.

I upgraded the rims/tires on my '05' TT two years ago (C load range to E load range), but didn't upgrade the spare. The spare is the original Maxxis with excellent tread, but I plan to replace it with a new tire this year because of it's age.

You may want to use a more durable valve. You can get something besides the rubber ones.

When replacing tires I always tell the dealer I want metal valve stems...

The stem was and is metal, the seat portion that passes through the rim is rubber. The leak was in the rubber portion. The installer used the grease type sealer that stays playable like pipe sealant on the rubber portion.

That is interesting, those stems hardly ever cause problems.

Straying from the subject a little...

I borrowed an enclosed trailer and towed it across NC to deliver some cabinetry several years ago. Strangely enough, the tire would start going flat if I ran over 35ish mph. If I pumped it up and drove slowly, it would hold it's pressure. It turned out to be a cracked rubber valve stem, and was on the wheel that faced the sun while the trailer was parked on the owner's property. That was a first for me!

Since then I have paid attention to trailer tires parked in direct sunlight for long periods. Cracking on the tire's sidewall and rubber stem seems to be worse on the sun facing side.

In this case the spare is mounted under the rear and covered, never has been used and never exposed to sunlight and the year of purchase of the 5er is 2012. I never thought to examine it for cracks etc.

Chances are that it got hit with a rock or something.

That's possible but it is covered with the typical white vinyl exterior/fuzzy white stuff interior cover, with an elasticized opening that holds it tight, keeping the cover taught over the tire side wall and rim opening and the valve is 4" or so deep and there are no marks to indicate damage to the exterior of the cover.
Maybe just dried out rubber on the valve core.
