Tote - What size do you use?

I am planning to purchase a sewer tote. I am wondering what would be an appropriate size for a family of five. I don't want to have to empty the tank more than once a day. Are there better brands than others? What do you recommend? what is the best way to transport the tote? I DO NOT have a ladder or a rear square bumper, so those options are out.

30 gallon. I have not heard any bad brands. All are pretty much the same quality. I don't recommend using it for black water. That can get real nasty. Have the family go to the restroom facility during the day to conserve black water space.

Just me and the wife. We use a 32 gal. tote. There are many ways to carry it. Search "rv tote carrier" or "rv rear bumper tote carrier" on Goggle Images.

On one of my previous trailers, I made a tote carrier to fit the rear bumper. The tote center frame would slide over the mount. I drilled a hole in the totes center frame so I could pin it to the mount for transport.

I would go with one that you can dump at least 3/4 of your tank into with one shot. They fill fast and it can be a mess when you don't close the valve in time. Remeber the valve is at the tank and a 3" hose can hold a gallon of water per 2.5ft of run roughly.

If you can watch you black water level and manage not needing to dump, all the better. Agree that they are all mostly equal but would suggest a vented one as I am not familiar with all of them. You need a place to vent the air or it will not fill or dump properly if that is not an option on some of the smaller ones. I have a 35 gallon blue tote that I am happy with but will be modding to air tires for the rougher terrain. The hard rubber wheels do not have enough ground clearance. Also note what you get with some models vs others with accessories upon initial purchase.

I have seen two or three of these setups here lately being the large empty tote is carried in the back of the truck and they will use a mercator type 12VDC PUMP and will pump their tanks up into the tote sitting in the back of the truck. One guy said be sure to have a tote at least the same size of the tank being dumped to prevent over flow.

Once the tote is filled then they would remove the hose from the trailer and tie it off up high on the truck and head for the dump site. Then it is gravity flow from the truck to the dump. I watched one of these being done and it was truly a NO MESS operation. When the tote was emptied then the guy washed it out using the dump site hose.

The pump I saw was the FLOW JET 18555-000 Waste Water Pump Kit that was carried in a nice hard plastic carry case.

I wish I had a square bumoer to mount it to. Our TT has a molded fiberglass bumper. My TV is an Excursion and I do not relish the idea of having the tank inside the TV. It is a nice setup you have, though.

We have 25gal 2 wheel barker tote-along, works great.

I've see a guy who rigged up mount to carry the tank under the TT between the frame. I carry mine on the rear ladder or truck bed if there isn't a dog there. I imagine you could find a way to mount to the A-Frame too.

BED685 - I wouldn't do that as well haha... Looks like you stuck with mounting it on the back of the trailer or underneath it. Keep in mind these totes don't weight very much empty so carrying them on the outside of the trailer should not be too bad a task. I've even seen them hung from the rear ladder swinging in the breeze haha...

My OFF-ROAD POPUP setup doesn't have any waste tanks just fresh water so I don't have any of those problems to deal with. I do capture my sink waste water and tote that to the bath house to pour down their toilet when my 7-gal Aqua-Tainer containers get full. I use a two wheeled folding cart to handle this for me. I do the same thing with the Cassette Pottie removable 6-gallon waste tank that also has two wheels on it. I tote that to the bath house and down the toilet it goes as well...

I guess no matter what type of RV unit we have we all still have to deal with waste water one time or another.

Get one as large as your tank if you can... AND make sure it has a side dump valve.. the ones you lift up to dump get HEAVY FAST...

We use the Barker 32 gallon 4 wheel version and the FloJet macerator pump, great combination for camping. Also use the FloJet for emptying the tanks at home if needed.
