Towing Decison???
I have a 2010 ford f150 4x4 4.6 3v 3.55 (7900 towing capacity). We are new to RV'ing and have a Jay Flight 22fb picked out (dry weight 4300, 127' high), but I'm wondering if the Jay Feather Sport 221 would be a much easier tow. It is about 3800 lbs and 118" high.
Any advice/opinion/thoughts on either trailer or towing would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'd be fine all the way up to 6K lbs wet. My trailer is about 6000lbs wet and my new F150 (5.4L) pulls it like a bat out of XXX. I don't know about the 4.6L and the 8000lbs towing claim though-- I know I'd buy a 3/4 ton 6.4L if I were towing more than 8000lbs.
I've been under powered once and I'm a fast learner.
PS-- start looking at the wet weight (GVWR) of the trailers instead of the dry-- that dry weight is what the sales people use-- the the folks that have to tow the trailer.

That 3.55 rear might be a problem. We have the JayFlight 22FB and pull it with a 2009 F150, 4x4, 4.6L, 2v, 3.73 rear with no problem even in the mountains.

To add just a bit to what has been said, and both are right in what they advised. What JPBeck says about wet weight is absolutely right but remember the wet wt. is a full load, fresh water and all. In my opinion unless you're headed so a CG w/o hookups you might, for instance, want to just carry enough water to flush the toilet, etc going and coming. By doing this you'll cut down on some weight and make it easier on your tow vehicle. Just stop and think what you need along with the regular stuff you "like" to have onboard and don't over pack with unnecessary things that may add unwanted weight. Since your truck is a 2010 I doubt you're looking to head out and buy a replacement unless you're willing to take a bath money wise or you know someone the owns a dealership and can get a great buy. So, do your homework with regard to what your current truck can tow safely then load up and have a great time.

Unless I've read the Ford Tow Guide wrong, my truck is rated for 7900lbs, yours is 5500lbs. If your having no problems, then I should definitely have no problems with the 22fb. The 3v puts out more power/torque. If I had the 3.73 axle with my engine, it would be rated for 9400 lbs.
I was starting to get a little po'd with everyone telling me I needed a bigger truck. We're 99.9 % decided on the 22fb. I'll keep you all posted on our final decision (to be made at the RV show in January )
BTW I really like the colour of your truck, it would have been my second choice.

Generally actual weights are not readily available during the purchase process. What I have always done is take the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the truck and add the GVWR of the trailer to that of the truck. With the sum of these numbers, I compare this total to the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of the truck. Example
My F350 has a GCWR of 20,000#
My truck's GVWR is 9,900#
My Jayco's GVWR is 8,300#
SO 9,900# + 8,300# = 18,200#
Compared to the GCWR of my truck of 20,000#, I still have reserve capacity of 1,800#.
The GVWR of the truck/trailer is the maximum weight that the truck/trailer can weigh with the actual weight of the truck/trailer with all the items loaded in each.
The GCWR is the maximum allowable weight of the actual weight of the truck and trailer fully loaded that the truck can tow.

The RV show here is the last wknd of January. We have a 22fb waiting for us
there. The local Jayco dealer even guaranteed us his fall pricing, and if Jayco
offers some show incentives, we'd get that as well.

I have an 06 Mountaineer with the 4.6 3v and 3.55 gears. My 19 bh has a wet rating of 6200 lbs. I have no problem towing it. Just be sure to leave it out of o/d (like the manual says) and let that high revving ohc v8 eat. The 4.6 is a great motor. Millions of taxi cabs and police cars cant be wrong.

I used to tow a 6k lb. trailer with a 4.6L in my 2004 Explorer 4x4. It was fine on flat ground, but hills were not too pretty. In my Explorer, mountains would have been entirely out of the question with 6k lbs.
