TRC Surge Guard 34730 30A Mounting Scenario

I'm strongly considering the purchase of one of these units for my TT.....

Name: Surge Guard.jpg
Views: 36
Size: 4.8 KB

But rather than plug the unit in at the shore power post - I was thinking of cutting the 30A TT cord inside the TT and installing the proper male / female ends that would both plug into the 34730 inline (prior to the TT power converter) - or - plug back into each other if I wanted to quickly bypass the 34730.

My reasoning....a) better theft and weather protection b) visibility inside the TT vs going out to the hook-up point to diagnose c) cost d) quick by-pass if needed

Thoughts or concerns for this arrangement?

Just by the hard wired version, don't cut up the power cord. You can pick from TRC/SurgeGuard 34520 or Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C and accomplish exactly what you are trying to do with the product designed to do it.

By the way, I have the exact device you are considering. Leave it outside with no concerns. It's built to be outside, mine has rode out several rain events with no issue. The optional clam-shell housing and a pad lock secure enough to discourage all but the most determined thiefs. Lastly you can pickup this to see the voltage level inside if really necessary..

Besides if you have a real issue, you'll be out at the box.

Thanks for your input. Another point I should have mentioned....not sure how long we will have this TT and it would be nice to *easily* take the protector with us if we upgrade. I have and electronic version of the plug-in voltmeter - a great companion to the protector. Another convenience of moving the protector inside is to know (in the dark of night or rain) is if your shore power is out or tripped.....or if the protector is simply in the midst of cycling through a reset.

X2 on the hard wired version.. the wired ones are not really made to lay on their side.. the company will not warranty them if they are used horizontally.

I just checked their installation instructions and found nothing that would restrict any mounting position. I can think of no logical reason why any mounting position would affect the operation (or warranty) of this kind of device.

I plan to remove my hardwired PI/EMS-HW30C if I upgrade from my TT, just have to put the junction box back in it's place.

I was also curious why mounting the OP's TRC Surge Guard horizontally would be a warranty issue, so I found a PDF manual on the TRC 34730 model and it stated:

"The manufacture recommends mounting the unit any way other than flat where the label is facing the sky. Vertically or horizontally upside down (label facing the earth) is advised."

I wonder if this is primarily for "outdoor" applications?

Rustic - I followed your link to read for myself, while picture references a PORTABLE 34750 / 34730....the mounting warning in the instructions quoted above and in the link reference the HARDWIRED version. I cant imagine "lable down" instructions applying to the portable 34730 as the indicator lamps wouldn't be visible.

Great discussion - thanks to all for your input.

Good point, and it did cross my mind, I just didn't put enough thought into it.

I went back to look closer at the link, and your correct that the hardwired Q&A is attached with the Surge Guard 34730 portable unit data sheets... go figure. I wonder if the "horizontal" mounting recommendation applies only to the hardwired models, because I did look further and couldn't find anything specifically noting the portables.

Following is a picture of the work area I have to install the Portable 34730. Shore cable box is on the left with power converter directly behind it (obviously)....If installation limitations are the only objection (and I can get those cleared)....I have a few installation options to consider.

It appears that you could work something out with the area. I did something very similar with my hardwired EMS, mounted it to the side of the shore power cable box. I basically removed the OEM junction box and replaced it with the EMS unit.
