Trojan 27TM Deep Cycle Marine/RV Battery

Greetings,

I did a search in the forum to see if this particular battery came up and believe me I found 2 pages on batteries but not this one specifically.

I am getting two of these that are about 2 years old each for a very reasonable price (free) and since I know the maintenance and charging history of them I feel I'm getting a good deal

Here is my question. Is anyone using these batteries currently and if so how have they held up for you?

We will also be adding a 200 watt solar system (not free )so we don't have to be limited to full hook ups anymore.

If you are not using this particular battery but are using Trojan batteries please feel free to chime in.

This is a new 27 series TROJAN battery with a 105AH capacity rating. This battery states it will produce 12VDC @ 25Amps for 170 min. This battery weight 50 lbs..

Love those FREE gifts. The price is ALWAY right when FREE. I am a SOLAR nut, so I really enjoy hearing about different solar projects. I have 2 T-145 Trojan 6 volt batteries, 1 250 Watt Solar panel and they have performed GREAT! Combined the T-145's provide 260Ah (8.8 hours @ 25 Amps). Just enough for our dry-camping life style. You will love it when you go Solar, but like us, you will need to create a new dry-camping lifestyle.

Your 2006 19H, I would assume, does not have a 3 or 4 mode Battery Charge controller. Replacing it should be high on your project list. When you decide to add a solar panel, you will still be able to add a Solar Charge Controller to your existing one with no issues, as they will work together.

Roy, thank you for the response. I have googled this battery, I was hoping for some real world experience from others on this battery concerning reliability. My understanding is they are a good battery that could possibly last me another 3-5 years with proper care.

Don, We are looking forward to finally going solar. We were going to start out with a basic 200 watt kit from Windy Nation due to budget I can't do more than that at this time. I did find the kit $75 cheaper on eBay and it is still sold by Windy Nation. We have already changed out most our lights to LED, had to keep one of the regular lights (the wife doesn't like reading by LED). I do like your setup, I have bookmarked your page for future reference.

I purchased Trojan batteries for the school district I worked for to use in our floor machines and they out lasted any other battery I ever tried. Very expensive but worth it. When I figured how long they lasted over the others the cost was less. They are very big in the golf cart industry.

200 watts is a very respectable starter kit. Make sure you use 1gauge wire to hook them up to your charge controller and then to the batteries. Too many people use too small a wire and that hinders performance..

I wonder why you are recommending 1 gage wire to connect the panels to the controller? Maybe I'm missing something, but....

The panels put out ~5.75 amps/each. Connecting in parallel and then feeding the controller you might get 11.5 amps. For a 3% voltage drop, #8 AWG is fine for a panel set 20' away (40' of wire) from the controller. Of course, larger wire has less voltage drop, but also costs more, is heavier, harder to run and harder to handle. It's always a balance and a blanket recommendation of 1 ga wire, without knowing more of the particulars of the situation, can send new solar users off in a costly and frustrating direction.

Most people will upgrade their solar as time goes by.. MORE POWER as Tim the Toolman would say... easier and cheaper to run 1 ga now rather than have to redo it later...
