Question Two Vehicle Security

Alarms, jimmi jams, key plugs, what does everyone do to secure your tow vehicle and deter theft?

I fear coming back to the trailer and finding our truck gone or driving into town for supplies and finding the same. Any helpful tips on what you do to secure your tow vehicle?

On another RV forum it was posted that the campers were breaking camp and went to hitch up the RV, but the TV hitch was gone. Easy pickin's for a fast five finger discount.
Keep those hitches and spare tires locked up too !

We have been throwing around ideas for the tt security when on the road:

Stealing tt:
- We have the tongue locked down
- We have the X-chock blocks with the cheepy locks on each one (to keep the honest thief honest ).

Indoor tt:
- Breezi (when we leave her behind - poor kid - but she has a fearsome bark!)
- Ummmmm still trying to figure out what kind of alarm to put in

(reading this thread with interest!)

Well as for as the TT goes you have several options since the TT has both 110v and 12v power options. You could ether use a stand alone home alarm with wireless sensors or a standard car alarm. Both have their advantages and disadvantages just depends on your personal preference and situation.

Not so much worried about somebody stealing the 5th wheel as I am about them stealing the tow vehicle. From what I hear it's really easy to steal trucks and I don't want our F350 to be disappearing while we're out on a nature hike or in town.

I have a "CompuStar" command start/burglar alarm complete with turbo cool down feature... My truck is always right where I park it... It even pages me if someone starts to mess with it.. (2 mile range on the pager)

Do you have the camera in the tailgate? We learned from others who also has them to make sure to lock the tailgate (slow the thief down if anything). It's pretty expensive to replace the tailgate

Albertaguy,

You obviously don't live in Texas or the Southwestern U.S.; Chevy's are the pickups preferred by thieves here--and buyers of stolen pickups in Northern Mexico!!! I'm just sayin', Dodge man.

Well you are from Alberta... so we can excuse your poor taste... My hitch cover reads " remove to tow fords". The ONLY reason to buy a Dodge is for the Cummings motor. Highest tow rating best mileage most torque and HP... GM Duramax....

Don't forget to mention that the GM Duramax is a copy of an Isuzu diesel.... err, I can't even spell "Chevolay" as the ad use to say.

I will second the CompuStar Alarm/Auto Starter system.
I use to install stereo and alarms in my younger days. I am on my 4th vehicle with the CompuStar Alarm/Auto Starter. I have installed all of them myself.
I have a Compustar system installed in the TT as well that is an alarm system only. Obviously I do not need an autostarter on the TT.
The alarm covers all doors and storage doors outside. Proximity sensors inside cover the windows and any other way they may decide to get inside such as the sky light in the bathroom.
I will always have an alarm system on any vehicle I own even if it is a Travel Trailer!!

You might be talking about specs from a different time period, today's (2011) highest tow rating goes to the Ford Super Duty line and their inhouse built Power Stroke.

But I don't want to continue to derail this thread.. how about we talk about vehicle security, not brand loyalty. =)

I'll look into that, I've heard good things about that and the Viper so far. Thank you!

They just changed it so they could claim that prize... but from what I hear it has already caused trouble.. when they reflashed some of the previously sold 2011's. The tranny could not handle the torque.. another reason to buy GM the mighty Alison transmission.. the 1000 series is used all the way up to a 10 ton truck.
