USB Port in bedroom

I'm a little surprised, when I search this forum and the owners manual for "USB" no results are found? I even mentioned the USB port in another post and it didn't pop up in the search?

Anyway, is there a trick to getting the USB port to work? Is it like the USB port on my battery booster that there is a switch to turn it on so it isn't constantly using power?

My USB ports are always hot. My understanding is that they only "draw" is when they are being used, and then only milli-amps, thus their advantage.

Others have reported rhat theirs aren't functioning properly, in other threads. I'm thinking that Jayco may have received a bad bath from a supplier. I tested all of mine with an iPad and charging cord....

Exactly. Mine are always on and I've not had to do anything to enable them.

We used the two that are in the main bedroom this week to charge our devices and they worked just fine.

This is not intended to be a belittling question but do you have your battery connected? Do your lights work? No offense intended.

No offense taken I used to work in tech support and lost count of how many times power cycling fixed an issue.

Yes, the batteries are connected, all lights, awning, tongue jack, etc. work. I have not tested the USB ports while plugged into shore power, but from what I'm hearing here they should run off just the battery.

I have also not tested the 12V socket right beside them. Packing up for the weekend tonight I will run some more tests.

Good to know it is not switched, now I can move on to further troubleshooting knowing I'm not wasting my time.

In my trailer, the USB port is on the same fuse as all the bedroom lights. Its a DC circuit that runs through the converter. I have do nothing to turn it on other than have power supplied to the trailer either by battery or shore cable.

Thinking this could be like the classic "my LED lights don't work" problem. LEDs are polarity sensitive. Is it possible that the factory reversed the leads, or failed to hook them up at all, at the factory? Hard to check USB port with a multi-meter, but can probably pull out the plug and check the leads on the back. Is there 12V power coming into the plug, and is its polarity correct?

I always thought the outlet/ USB combos were ac only. No dc required.

Maybe I'm wrong?

Norty1,

I haven't taken one apart, but since it is producing 5 ~ 7Vdc to charge batteries, it most likely has a single diode (Half wave rectifier and a couple of resistors to limit the Voltage & current. It is making it's own DC from the 120V ac.

I thought the ones being installed now were kind of like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...2CCSVQHHA7FWFW
well, except the ones I saw at the RV show were only 2 port models.

These are 12V DC input, and actually, the one linked does indicate a 40mA standby current draw, so it does have some minimal parasitic draw.

Hmmm, for $24 maybe that needs to go on my RV mods list. I am currently using a 2 port cigarette type adapter in the 12V receptacle on the entertainment centre.

We just use the same chargers we use at home in the ac outlet. I priced those little boogers and decided they were to expensive. I can plug ours in anywhere.

I use one of these...

Anker 60W/12A 6-Port USB Charger PowerPort 6

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P936188..._jW0yxb0Z2CJ7G

Smart charging on all ports, doesn't matter device amp requirements, and gives me whatever options I need to plug in to charge while only using one AC outlet.

OK. After working on a mod on my 377 RLBH today, I can say UNEQUIVOCALLY, that my combination 12v/USB outlet in the bedroom is powered exclusively by 12v. The power just happens to come from 15a fuse #5 in my 12v fuse panel, which also controls the bedroom lights....

I was attempting to hardwire in a 12v wire for my weather alert radio, and I did a little "12v welding" when I slipped..........

Here's a bit more info for any folks whose 12v plug is working fine, but the USB isn't working.....

It appears that the 12v plug is wired directly, but the USB is tapped into the 12v wires, using those squeeze clip type splices. (There must be resisters in the USB unit that reduce the voltage from the 12v to the 5.7 for USB.) The wire on the USB is small enough that the squeeze splice may or may not be making contact with the conductor.

I was wiring my weather radio into the same 12v circuit, and I must have jostled the wires enough that the USB stopped working. Had to take it apart again, and make a better connection with the USB leads.....
