Water 'hammering'.....

What causes this?

Posted in the pup forum, I had a water pressure loss caused by this problem that resembles a very noisy/erratic water pump- which my pup doesn't have. I replaced what I thought was a faulty water inlet/check valve to no avail. I removed the water line completely and blew compressed air through it, and upon reassembly, still had no pressure (well, very little) and water hammering.

I already took the faucet apart, cleaned it, and reassembled it- and I'm not claiming to be the faucet king, but its a simple piece and nothing appears to be broken or out of place.

I going for a new faucet next because I'm running out of options. There are only 3 parts to this system- the water inlet, a piece of hose, and a faucet.

p.s. This is the type of faucet I have...

Anybody have problems with 'hammering' and what was the fix??

I'm no plumber, but I would try either lengthening or shortening the supply tubing by 6 inches or a foot. My guess (oh no!) is the tube happens to be just the right length, like a pipe organ, to 'resonate'.

Would love to try that...trouble is, the plastic line is a specific length for the camper and it has molded/flared ends to fit specific connectors.

Hopefully the faucet is/was the problem...I'll know when it comes in and I can install it.

I'm not familiar with this system either but I'm assuming that you attach a outside water line to a connection that is connected to an inside line that this unit is attached to.(whew),

Do you use a pressure reducing device of some sort? I'm wondering if your line pressure is too high. Does it start hammering shortly after turning it on? Can you bench test it with a regulator? I know in houses they run dead end lines above the taps to stop them from hammering but to me this sound like the pressure is a issue here. Just guessing though. Let us know when you figure it out. It may save some one else some grief.

It only hammers when you activate the faucet. Water does come out of the faucet, but just a trickle.

Whats wierd- the faucet worked fine when we first brought the camper home and hooked it up, no issues whatsoever- no noise, nothing but good pressure & flow.

It didn't start hammering until after being hooked up for several hours at the campground. Once I hooked it up again at home (thinking hopefully it would be alright again), it didn't change- just noise and a trickle.

Could it be sucking air on the suction side of the pump? This can cause a low, irregular flow. Check out the suction line that goes to the pump. Check the strainer, if you have one. Good luck.

No pump in my water system. The faucet is a two stage ("Fump" faucet) that allows city water pressure in one port (by pushing down), or sucking water from a container (pushing up/down repeatedly to draw water).

Ok, this is just a SWAG, but mayhap you have the city water line hooked up to the hand pump port on the faucet?

@ Lady....sorry to confuse...the faucet has only one connection for 'city' water...the other connection is for an interior water container (which we don't have/use). The water lines can't be hooked up wrong...two different types of connectors & tube sizes.

Things are looking up- the new faucet got here today! Woohoo! Details coming soon...

No confusion from you. I was just taking a stab in the dark.

Interesting. This make me think there is a blockage from some debris in the faucet. If the CG was on a well system, something could have been drawn up from the well, and ended up in your camper. The wire mesh screen would catch most stuff, but maybe it was small enough to get through that. This is just my wild stab in the dark.......

Thumbs up Woohoo !!!!! Its fixed !!!...

(Insert bad mental picture of white guy doing happy-dance here)...

The faucet was the whole problem with the 'hammering' issue. A quick faucet replacement and a few loose couplers (with anticipation of removal again I neglected to tighten them all the way) tightened...I turned on the water...and presto! Awesome pressure (a bit too much, I put the regulator on the hose), quiet flow...and lots of 'feel good' about camping again. :hihi:
