water heater won't stay lit

We have a 1998 Jayco Designer fifth wheel. We are full timers who work, so we aren't home to monitor the hot water heater. Often it is out when it's time to shower, do dishes, etc. Frustration is the word at 5 am when there's no hot water! It will light, and stay lit for a few hours, and then it's out again. Any suggestions?

does your oven go out as well?

check the gas pressure coming out of your main regulator. Mine was low, once I fixed it, both appliances now function as designed.

search the internet on how to test your system with your own manometer.

No, the oven lights and stays lit. The stove lights and stays lit. It's just the water heater. Frustrating! Hubby is going to try to blow out the burner tube, etc. tomorrow to see if that will help.

blowing out the burner tube made no difference at all. It will heat a tank (6 gal) and then it's out again. Is it the control module that controls the gas flow? And heaven forbid, what is that cost, and can we replace that ourselves? We're full timers in a park, and can't haul this thing into a shop.

electronic ignition or pilot light?
- check the burner tube damper (small adjustable opening in the burner tube). try adjusting that opening.
- all of the parts are easy to remove / replace. Just look on google for directions and don't be afraid to try. as a worst case, it won't work (which it doesn't work now as you said).
- you can take the control module off, take it to a shop and have them test it.

Without the make/model number its difficult to troubleshoot.

Could be the probe not sending the signal back to the board..
If this is the case, that gives 2 options.. probe is bad/going bad.. or board is going bad

make sure the ignitor/probe is in the flame good. You can take any corrosion off with steel wool.

When the WH fires up, does it sound like a jet engine?

Is there any corrosion around the solenoid(s) on the gas line?
