What is causing these to bend?

My question too. I can see where the one in the first picture could come in contact with the hitch in making a sharp left turn causing it to bend. Especially backing into a site that had a dip in it causing the two vehicles to be in a V shape and making a left turn at the same time.

The pin on the shank is the one getting bent.

And, there is some slop with the shank in the receiver.
