WIFI "WatchGuard" Heads Up

Upon using the WIFI at the CG I'm presently camping at I found that I could not log-on to any "secure" websites (ie; Financial Institutions, Yahoo Mail, etc.), or even download Windows Update. I could open up the selected website's homepage, but as soon as I tried to log-on I would get one of the following errors:

"Response denied by WatchGuard HTTP proxy"
"Reason: body content-type denied rule"

-OR-

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

Additionally, my Norton went into "Autofix" mode during a few attempts ...., and after contacting both Norton & Microsoft we still didn't come to a resolution. Also, I don't have any "WatchGuard" program on my laptop.

Root Cause: I had the CG office contact their WIFI provider and it was determined through our conversation that they have "WatchGuard" as a means to block "undesirable" websites and to control bandwidth usage. Now they are trying to figure out why "secure" sites are being blocked.

Just thought I would bring this "WatchGuard" condition to your attention so that you don't spend over 2 hours on the phone (like I did) with Norton and/or Microsoft thinking your PC is having a meltdown with a virus like "rootkit".

That is such a pain!

You do have to figure that anywhere you go with public wifi you are unsecure - really even with secure sites believe it or not. These man in the middle attacks and so forth are really nasty. Yeah - I know I am a geek, but I setup a personal VPN at home. When I am on public WiFi I connect back to my home network and securely browse through it. Not foolproof, but at least a little better.

I miss the old DOS days...lol....maybe when I am camping I should just disconnect!

I too started to get concerned a few years back connecting to my web sites using public WIFI hotspots.

This was a big reason for me to get the VERIZON MIFI unit. Who knows if I am any safer but at least I don't go thru the local McDonalds or BOOKS-R- US anywhere...

I also don't have to mess with the local camp grounds somewhat weak wifi connections... The low monthly VERIZON rate turned out to be a pretty good deal for us. We get to use my big M90 main laptop, wifes portable laptop, all of the tablets etc that we have brought with us just about anywhere we go.

I've tried and am always unsuccessful. I can make my smart phone a hot spot though.

Find a good proxy server that watchdog will allow, and just bypass the thing.
