07 and up suburban 2500 hitch ?

We are going suburban 2500 shopping tomorrow. I have three to look at a 2008,2005,2004. The 2008 has a hitch that only has listed 1000lbs max tongue wt with wt dist. My understanding these hitches are not replaceable on the 2007 and up suburbans. I have a jayflight 32bhds and probably over that limit.Anybody have any other suggestions for the later model subs ? I do know that if we go with the 04 or 05 I can get an aftermarket hiitch for it.Thanks

I am not familiar with the 2008 Suburbans, but I would be surprised if a good hitch shop couldn't put you on something better.
Even if they had to cut it off and weld a new one one.
Call around to see what the deal is with not being able to replace the factory hitch.
As I always said at work, I can do anything with enough money and time :-)

I'll have to admit I can't find anything on forums for upsizing the hitch and eTrailer doesn't list anything.
Never ran across that before.

The newer body sububans do not have platform type hitches that mount under the frame, they have hitches that slide into the frame or appear that way.

This is exactly what we ran into and why we went with the DMax. Our trailer now is no problems, but we have dreams of upgrading and the 1000 TW limit on the 2500 Suburban really takes away a lot of the advantage of the 2500 over the 1500. We are very happy with the DMax, but 3 kids we really fill it up, longer trips may ultimately require my wife bringing a second car.

It's been 5 yrs and I have not seen any aftermarket receivers being made available so I guess it truly is either really hard or really expensive.

Smart move to consider changing out the GM OEM receiver on the 2004/2005 models you are considering.

http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...Concerns/page3

As stated, I haven't heard of any aftermarket solution to the newer model Suburban receivers either, and I'm sure it has to do with the fact the these newer receivers are an integral part of the Burb's frame and rear bumper system. It now has designed-in crumple duties, and this fact alone may influence the specified tongue weights in WD mode.

The receiver is not replaceable, but you can have a weld shop do a RV type "beef up". I have a 2011 suburban 3/4 ton with a certified "beef up". It' totally legal and certified with paperwork and a new sticker on your receiver. My beefed up receiver is now 1400 lbs with WDH. My spare tire now rides elsewhere because that's where the beef up is. Totally worth it.

Fred,

Just curious of what was involved in your receiver "beef up".., if you get a chance could you post a couple pics of what the weld shop did? I'm sure other Burb owners would be interested.

Please note that the 2011 Burb's specified Payload Capacity and Tow Rating (4W-9,400lbs & 2W-9,600lbs) doesn't increase with receiver upgrades/modifications. Your Eagle 334RBTS is a heavy TT with a GVWR of 10,950lbs (UVW is 8,395lbs, Ship Weight is higher), so depending on one's loading habits exceeding the Burb's "actual" Tow Rating is highly possible.

Thanks,

Bob

Good point Bob.
Just for my own piece of mind, I like to stay at or below 75% of rating.
If I was purchasing a TV, I would consider other options that better match the TT.
You can never be too cautious when towing. It's serious business for you, you family and others on the road.
This choice seems a little under rated IMHO

Safe camping,
Doug

I hear ya. It's just 3 of us who go camping. My wife, myself, and our 6 year old. We pack 3 bicycles, one full ice chest, couple lawn chairs and some duffle bags full of clothes and usually only camp within 200 miles of our home for two nights max. I do have a 4X4 so my limits are 9,400 lbs max tow and 1,400 lbs receiver with WDH. My new 334rbts hasn't arrived yet but I know it will weigh at least 9,000 lbs. So I'll be right at both limits. Maybe soon I'll upgrade to a D max. I've towed at the limits before with my old 2007 Tahoe and a 1999 Fleetwood Wilderness. It can be done safely. I'll let you all know how she tows.

Fred,

Good to hear that you are aware of the loaded weight implications..., to many folks overlook this important factor.

Once you get your TV/TT combination loaded up, the following JOF sticky may be helpful at the CAT scale: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...igh-Your-tt-tv

Travel safe and enjoy the new TT when it arrives

Bob

Swingrrr, who "beefed up" you hitch and re-certified it to 1400lbs? I wasn't aware that average welding shops had the capability to re-cert weight limits.

Hi Swingrrr - any change you can send us some pictures of your beefed up hitch?
