1500 Serria

Bought a new 321RLDs TT this past fall. I pulled it home with a GMC serria 1500 had a WD hitch. I do have Lt tires on the truck to. Dealer was 35 miles from home. Need to pull the trailer 90 miles two times a year to a seasonal site. Should I get a bigger truck or would be ok to used the 1/2 ton Serria?

My guess is you are over the limits on that truck so if something happens you may have a liability issue... Not sure without specifics...

That being said.. I would probably rent a 3/4 ton truck twice a year instead of buying one.

x2, I am pretty sure you are over the limits on that 1500. Even if you are barely at the weight limits or under the sheer length is an issue for that truck in my opinion.
I do agree with drk98 on renting a truck as well. If you are only towing it twice a year, I recommend renting a 3/4 ton for a day or two to get the trailer where you need it.

I agree, a 1/2 ton isn't a good match for the Eagle 321RLDS (2015 model) even at the TT's "shipped" UVW.

Utilizing a 3/4 ton truck with a 1,200lb to 1,400lb rated WDH would be a much better match, especially in less then ideal towing conditions (poor weather, roads, etc.).

I might just consider contracting with a hauler to move you trailer for you. If you rent a truck you will need a WD hitch and adjust it each time you move the trailer since presumably it will be a different truck which means slightly different geometry. hiring a professional might cost more per instance, but will be much less hassle.

You might want to contact your dealer to see if they would be will to do this, or possibly they might be able to connect you with the delivery service they use from the factory. Those drivers generally don't have back hauls and if they can make a couple hundred $ with a short 90 mile trip it could be interesting to them.

Heck, there might even be someone on the forum who lives near you that might be interested in the work.

I could make a case on both sides of this and depends on a couple factors. I would not recommend buying a new truck based off the information thus far.

Yes, a bigger truck will typically always be more advisable. Especially with a long and tall trailer. The HD truck will be a night/day towing difference.

Next, are you over weight? What is the reasoning for considering a bigger truck?

It's possible you could be towing within the limits of the truck (need more info to know for sure) and if so I would not think a truck upgrade is "needed". Again, a bigger truck could always be advisable...

If you are within the weight limits and you feel comfortable driving the half ton, then we are back to asking the reasoning for the question of a bigger truck.

It's very feasible that even towing within the weight limits of the truck, you still may not be very comfortable with the tow vehicle. In that case, a transport, rental, or brand new truck could all be a reasonable solution.

If you do not want to tow overweight regardless of how "okay" she drives, then the bigger truck is always advisable.

In the end, nobody can tell you if you "need" a bigger truck, or if you are "ok" with the half ton. Seems everyone has their own tolerance for towing. Your best case for a bigger truck is if hit the scales and find that you are overweight. Putting yourself and others at risk and being overweight is not a good combo.

For me, when I towed at capacity and didn't want to get pushed/pulled all over the interstate in a half ton truck, I tried taking a side route on state highways with lower speed limits and less traffic.

Good luck!

If it's literally twice a year and 180 miles total I would absolutely just pull the thing with what you've got or find a buddy with a 3/4 ton to borrow when you need it.
