You may be cutting it kinda close. Loaded you are probably looking closer to 5000 lbs for the trailer. Dad has a 2011 Prerunner V6 double cab. It has good pulling power but is still a pretty light truck. Best of luck!!

Might be a struggle going up hill. I towed a Jayco X17Z hybrid last year with the Tacoma I had. Towed no problem on the flat hwy but it was struggling when we were going up hills near Fundy. The trailer has a weight of only 2800lbs and GVWR of 3500lbs. That trip is one of two main reason I traded in the Tacoma for my Ram.

The X23B is 4000lbs with a GVWR of 5000lbs. Do they have a used one on their lot that you can rent for a weekend?

I have a 2011 Tacoma Prerunner, V-6 with the towing package. My TT is a 22' Keystone Passport with a dry weight of 3,500 lbs. The Tacoma will pull it fine at 60 MPH on a flat surface, but it feels like the power is maxed out. On about any type of incline, power is pretty much maxed out at around 45 MPH.

I had a similar experience last year when towing a rented Lance 1685 3000 miles last year from Seattle to Yellowstone and back with a 2011 Tacoma double cab long bed v6. It did hills ok but really struggled in headwinds and would drop down into 3rd to hold 60 sometimes. The engine was really working, and it wasn't pleasant sounding. Decided I needed more power so traded it on a 2012 F150 and that pulls our 24fbs well, and sounds much better doing it do boot.

I pull my 26BH with a loaded weight of around 5200lbs with a 2013 Tacoma SR5 Double Cab. I've taken the setup to the scales twice and I'm just under my limits for front and rear axle, GVWR, etc. It tows fine in 4th on the flat. If I'm going up a hill and have a strong headwind it downshifts to 3rd, but that doesn't happen too often. It even wants to shift up into OD at times but I keep it in 4th. I get about 2500 to 2600 RPMs in 4th at 60mph. Gas mileage is not good. The engine makes some noise but no more than when driving that speed in 4th with nothing behind me. I have not tried going up any significant grades but I would guess it will struggle. Good thing I live in Iowa!

My last trailer was a Coachmen Freedom Express LTZ 230BH with a dry weight of 4100 lbs, tongue weight of 450 lbs. My TV was a 2011 Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab Long Bed with the TRD Sport package. I thought that it handled everything fine in regards to pulling and braking. However I didn't like how the truck squatted in the back so I got the TSB Springs done as well as getting Firestone Ride-Rite Air Bags. You might take a look at the setup and see if an extra spring or Air Bags might help. The brake controller was a Tekonsha P3 and I just used those tow mirrors that strap on the doors for visibility. I think you're good to go...

At some point in the past I believe they improved the rear springs on the Tacomas. I know my 2013 has the 4 leaf pack and I have no "squatting" issues (my tongue weight is around 650 lbs) but I've heard Toyota put out a TSB to upgrade the springs on some of the older Tacomas. If you don't have the 4 leaf springs you will definitely have issues when loading the rear axle with just about any weight.. I've even heard of people who had issues just trying to put a couple of bicycles in the truck bed before getting the springs updated.

2007 taco prerunner with tow package and equilizer hitch. Added super springs in rear for more support. No probs towing my jayco 281 bhs dry weight 5200. It doesn't like hills but drive smart and you'll be fine.

tow vehicle is way too small for that size of a trailer

I had a 2012 Tacoma TRD Sport. Towing my hybrid x20e, it was ok on flat level land, however was really working hard on the inclines. I thought it was fine for the short 1-2 hour trips, but was concerned on longer trips. In wind I was white nuckleing it. Decided it would bring a short life to the Tacoma so traded it for a Tundra. The Tundra pulls the camper like it's not there (except for the gas mileage). I like that the Tundra has a built in temp gauge for the tranny, one more thing to not worry about.

I had a 2006 V6 4-Runner with an transmission cooler and up graded hitch added to pull my X18D hybrid. The camper maxed out loaded at about 4500lbs with a
TV capacity of 5000lbs... but if you read the fine print in the owners manual about the "towing capacity" it is measured by the manufacture with no cargo, no
passengers and a driver weighting 150lbs in the TV. The 4-Runner handled like all of Tacoma's written about.... ok on flat roads and not so well on the hills. Well I
have lived in Louisiana my whole life, but growing up my family always vacationed in the mtns.... that's why we traded the 4-Runner for a Sequoia Limited
with a tow package. Just returned from one week trip to north Georgia and other than 10 miles per gallon towing the driving was stress free.

You will be much happier with a bigger truck. My old 4.7 litre Tundra had was working hard up the hills with my 5500# 26BH

Just got back from a long beach trip with my jayco 281 bhs which weighs 5200 lbs dry 5800 loaded lol... Had no problems what so ever in a hilly 98 degree weather,... Saw alot of guys with too much truck with smaller campers getting worse gas mileage... If you tow for a living get a big personal truck. I have a CDL and I have no probs at all. Will not take to mountains but I have a ton of mods to my truck to make it a safe trip. Btw 13.8 mpg and trans temp stayed between 155 - 180 max.... Some people have too much truck...smh... I tow maybe once a month with this smaller truck so I will enjoy the 27 mpg any day of your full size truck.
