23J tow vehicles
Upgraded to a heavier HTT (23J) and I'm not happy with the performance of my TV ('03 Yukon XL 5.3 V8 with 3.73). I'd like to hear from 23J owners regarding TVs and performance. My main gripe is I have to stay around 60 mph to keep the tranny in overdrive. Otherwise it's in 3rd and running 3000+ rpms. Haven't been to a CAT scale yet...may have too much gear loaded. I've also considered the fact that speeds higher than 60 or so are dangerous unless the TV seriously overpowers the trailer (2500, 3500, deisel, etc.) Would appreciate any feedback you could offer.

What does the owners manual say about towing in OD? You may find that running at a higher RPM is more fuel efficient than being in OD with your foot buried in the carpet. Torque is what moves the load and I don't think a 5.3 is making much torque at 60mph in OD.

Assuming that your within your TV's weight limits, if the transmission is searching for a lower gear often when in OD under your towing conditions, then towing in 3rd is the better gear. The GM Vortec gassers are high rpm engines, they can run at 3,000 rpm all day. If your having issues towing in OD, then it sounds like 3rd gear would be a better selection for your TV/TT combination and towing conditions. The fact that you are towing a heavier TT.., your TV is going to react accordingly.
With my TV/TT combination most of my towing is in 3rd gear, unless I have ideal towing conditions I will tow in OD (no head wind, flats, etc.) . My average towing speed is 62mph...., in 3rd gear @ 2,700 rpm, and in OD @ 2,200 rpm. I prefer towing in 3rd because it provides enhanced engine responsiveness when I need it without the tranny hunting for gears.

I have a professional driver for a father -in- law.
His advice to me -- never tow in overdrive. And I don't. I lock overdirve out on my Dodge whenever I tow.
I know that some folks will say (and they are probably correct) that if you are on level roads, towing in OD is ok and safe.
I'd rather not take my chances.

Although my tv is a Ford, the owners manual says never to tow on overdrive, always in drive..........happy camping!

Your trailer tires are only rated for 60 mph anyway.. almost all RV tires with the ST designation are only rated to 60,,,

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I cant' find anything in the owner's manual about towing in OD, and I too have heard the advice of not towing in OD. I rationalized that a large vehicle marketed for towing with a tow package was engineered to tow in OD but it sounds like that was wrong.
I did not know the GM gas vortecs were fine to run at higher RPMs and I definately did not know there was a 60 or 65 mph limit on ST tires which I have. I did not mention that on the way home from that trip to Orlando one of the TT tires blew out. Figured I ran over something but I had been on a mad-man run for a couple hundred miles at 70 to 75 when the tire went down (scared the hell out of me too by the way).
So it is...low 60's in 3rd from here on. Thanks again for all the feedback.

Yep, its 65mph for ST trailer tires. And I also do most of my towing in 3rd gear.

I have the 5.3l LTZ Silverado 2010. I experimented with mine with or with tow/haul engaged. It definitely likes the button pushed. 63 on relatively level ground,cruise on us about it without having the tranny searching. Truck and trailer was close, but not overloaded

THAT is the key... as soon as the tranny starts to search drop down a gear... hunting up and down is the hardest thing on them.

What Seann45 said is key, if the TV is hunting for the gear downshift, it is better to run at a higher RPM, then to burn a valve or something else. I am not sure what style shifter you have or if you have a tow/haul mode button you can push. If you have a shifter like my parent’s older Suburban you just select 3rd gear and go. If you have something like my Dakota (4.7 litter with a six speed tranny) I just push a button and the computer changes all my shift points and keeps me out of OD.
