Andersen Ultimate screw up

Went to take delivery of our new 5th wheel today only to discover my brand new Andersen hitch was defective! Turns out the aluminum block they use for the coupler was milled with a hole that's too small to fit over the king pin. I called Andersen but they're closed on Saturday. I took it to a local machinist and was told it was 30/1000th's too small. Had him mill it out and it fit like a dream. I guess the guy at Anderson was on a bender the day he made mine. I hope that's not a common problem or they'll be getting a bad rep in short order. If it wasn't for dumb luck today, I would be waiting another week to take delivery and I would have missed my scheduled camping trip. Boy I'm mad today! Andersen - SHAME ON YOU!

I would make sure to call them on Wednesday. Maybe they will be receptive to some defects with their product.

Probably someone wasn't checking that the mill was worn.

Good question. I was a little suspicious of the Morryde king pin at first, but I tested on a different 5th wheel in the same lot and got the same result. Even if someone made a mistake (which we all do), how did this thing get past quality control? I have a hard time believing the guy that mills these blocks out is the same guy that ships it to you.

Now that's a good question.

Maybe they use the same people that Jayco uses for quality control.

No doubt. The milling is just one of the steps in the process.

Not the same people, but the same process MANY (most?) manufacturers use; random spot checks. Few, if any, products are checked 100%.

Same with most everything that is mass produced. I'll bet that Tredit can tell you how many of their rims they compute will have a pin hole in them someday.
