Another Hitch Weight Question

Just picked up a new 2017 Jay Feather 7 22BHM.

Dry Tongue weight 445# (with one battery and one 20# propane bottle I'm guessing ~550#)

Dry trailer weight 4246#

GVWR 5500#.

I pulled it home ~75 miles on the ball and it handled very well. Anyway, Instead of transferring over my old pieced together Reese WD hitch from my former trailer, I'm thinking of picking up a new Equalizer. If I do, what size would you go with the 6000/600 or the 10000/1000? I'm right at the upper end of the 6K and low end of the 10K range.

Primary tow vehicle is a Ram 2500 4x4.

Thanks in advance.

I would probably go with the 10k hitch as your tongue weight will probably be a fair bit higher than 550lbs.

If you load the trailer to its GVWR your tongue weight could be as high as 825lbs.

Loaded up to 5000lbs and with a slightly less weight on the tongue (13%) you would be looking at 650 at least. I would guess that your tongue weight would be between 650-825lbs.

This also recommends the 10k hitch...

Midnight, I have followed your posts about your 22BHM. Do you happen to know your loaded tongue weight? I am looking at this model with us being a family of 5 (3 children under 5) and the bunks would be great. I would tow with a GMC Acadia with 5200lb/600lb tw trailer weight limit and 1483 lb payload capacity. I know having the tongue weight right with wdh is important and I'm afraid the right tongue weight with this tt loaded would put me over the 600lb limit.

I have not officially had it on the scale yet loaded the way I have it currently. I will give you the numbers as soon as I do. I will add that in reference to another thread I have started about this trailer, do to the layout of this trailer having all of the heavy appliances etc behind the axles, it has been difficult for me to get enough tongue weight to make it pull well, especially when the black and grey tanks have water in them (we boondock alot with this trailer). I have had to move cases of drinking water and other beverages under the front sofa to give it enough weight to stay balanced on the road.

I should also add that I decided to go with an Anderson hitch instead of an Equalizer as I had originally planned. So far, happy with my choice.

User,

Don't forget to include the weight of the wdh plus the tw to compare to the factory receiver hitch max tw rating.

Mid,

If your having tw issues, could you possibly add a second 20lb propane tank? Or even 2-30lb tanks to add to the tw? Or a second battery if you mostly boondock?

Just a couple ideas!!!

Good luck!!!

Both good suggestions and something I am going to look at over the winter. I'm going to have to be a little creative if I decide to. The narrow body on this trailer keeps that front frame angle pretty narrow and I may have to do something like the tanks lined up front to back of each other instead of the traditional side by side.

We are boondocking again this weekend. Can't get enough of it!!
