I filled up the tank yesterday with E85. Im not planning on towing maybe once or twice, and then only a few miles between now an mid August. The truck normally only gets driven once a week in the summer months anyway, so it will be a while to run that tank out. The good news is, I bought it (the E85) for 2.95 a gallon. The bad news, I found it at a "stand alone E85 station" a few miles up the road for $2.59.

I started towing with E85 this summer. 2009 Sierra 1500 crew cab short box, all aluminum 5.3 flex fuel engine, 3:42 gears. Previous to E85 I ran 91 or 93 for towing. Consistently got 9 - 10.5 mpg. I installed a DIABLOSPORT 93 Octane tune and switched to E85 full time. Also installed a K&N air filter element. Now I get 8.5 - 9 mpg and it feels like I have more power towing up grades. 7000 lb, 27ft trailer. I can find E85 at least $1.50 per gallon cheaper than 91 or 93 in my area (Iowa).

You're saving $50.00 on a full tank but in worst case losing about 70 miles or using about 8 gals more to go the same distance. Looks like you're netting in the neighborhood of $30.00 per tank. I'd take that.

I know I'm a little late but e85 compared to e10 is going to yield about a 23% decrease in MPG. If you're mot paying at least 25% less for the e85 your trip will end up costing you more money than using regluar e10 (pump gas).
You will gain a little more power from it but unless you really need it you're not going to notice it.

Personally, I've never seen e85 as a cost effictive fuel for daily driving. Now if you're trying to make HP and you tune your vehicle to take advantage of it you can gain significant power with it.

I had a Taurus that was E-85 and was urged to try it. My experience over three tankfuls starting with nearly empty tank was a reduction in mileage of a bit over 20%, 22 to 17 MPG in similar driving. But the savings in price was less than 20% at prices a few years ago.

I agree that fuel to plant, transport, cook and distill the alcolhol was a waste as it did not produce more fuel than it was worth. The only reason it was cheaper was motor fuel tax discounts from the state and federal governments.
