Auxiliary Fuel Tank

Does anyone have a suggestion on what type of auxiliary fuel tank to install in the bed of a pick up? Saw some that were both gravity and electrically operated. Also saw on that replaces the tank under the truck.

Thanks

I have seen some Ford diesel trucks have an issue with rust in the fuel tanks. The newer trucks have plastic Tanks. If you have one I would get a plastic fuel tank and while your at it why not a bigger one. I know some loggers who use skid tanks every day they mostly use metal ones because there cheap and repairable.

I installed a DOT legal tank from Transfer Flow. They have DOT legal fuel tanks in various sizes up to 109 gallons for gasoline and diesel. They have excellent customer service and technical support.

I have a Titan replacement tank. It doubled my capacity from 26 to 52 gallons and nothing is in the bed. Works for me.

I have an extended cab short bed truck. There isn't much available for that configuration. IIRC I once saw a larger replacement tank that increased the capacity by something like a whole 6 gallons. Which brings up the 'bang-for-the-buck' factor. It just isn't cost effective to pay over $1000 for a tank that only gets you an extra 6 gallons.

On my previous truck I went down the extra fuel tank road. On a strictly 'bang-for-the-buck' basis, the best way of going was a 'in-bed' aux tank. I got a 100 gallon tank for IIRC around $600. I rigged up an electric fuel pump to refuel the main tank. Yes, it took up about 2' of room at the front of the truck's bed. But the truck was mostly a tow vehicle for a work trailer and never hauled much of anything in the bed.

I'm considering getting a cross-bed tank made for my current truck. I'm looking at a tank about 20" tall, around 58" in length and about 10" front to rear width. I figure it will give me about 35 to 40 gallons of extra capacity and only occupy about 10" of bed length. I think I can live with that.

I couldn't do that because I had a gas truck. It is illegal to use a non-certified tank in the bed of the truck. The tank from Transfer Flow I purchased was legal even on the Washington State Ferries which was important because we do cross the ferries occasionally.

Bed Tanks are easy to find on Craigs List. But maybe in rough shape.

I'm thinking of getting the Titan replacement tank for my F350 crew Cab long bed. They have a 65 gallon tank that would give me about 1000 freeway miles when not towing. For me that would be plenty.

I did the same... Titan tanks are great they are between the frame rails where they belong and dont take up precious bed space.
