Our 2 vehicles are both '13, an Explorer (the "Exploder") and an F350 diesel (BB King). I'm recently retired so we use both vehicles as "grocery getters" and most trips are around town unless we are towing the 5th. They both get 16-17 mpg in town. Diesel is a bit more $$ and the maint on the diesel is more $$$ (6Q vs 6 gal of oil ). At the end of the day tho I don't figure a huge penalty driving the diesel. The big hit was the original purchase but when we tow the 13k# beast down the highway I'm reminded why I bought a diesel, no regrets. I'm hoping the higher buy-in will be somewhat offset by reliability, resale value and my "hey, I've got a @@@@ load of torque" grin.
