Carlisle Radial Trail HD Tires

I just had 4 installed on my Jayfeather 242 and thought I would offer a few observations. They replaced the original Goodyear Marathons which were made in 2010.
The Marathons looked brand new with no cracks or other blemishes, (so much so that the tire guy wants them). They must have been covered or stored inside and not towed very far (the trailer is new to us).
The build date on the Carlisles was 26, 06 so very fresh tires.
The Carlisle are much stiffer, both sidewalls and tread then the old Marathons.
The Carlisles are also quite a bit narrower then the Marathons, (same size and load range)
The tread on the Carlisle looks to me like an "old time" trailer tire with a very solid tread pattern, there is even a solid band in the centre, with no sipping at all.
Towing wise it was only a 20 mile drive home but there was a lot of wind. I would have to say the new Carlisle's seem to pull easier and had a little less sway. (No WD or sway hooked up for the short trip)
We will have to see about longevity but so far so good.

The Carlisle HD are a new tire series as of this year. I installed them in May. So far I have been very happy with them.

Debating between Carlisle and Maxxis. So much to consider.

Hopefully they turn out to be a good tire. We are long overdue for more options when it comes to 15" tires. I almost stayed with st's on this new trailer but I just could not ignore the reliability we get from truck tires.

After I had a blowout on my 36 ft windjammer I put 4 new carlisle radial trails on. Went from load range C to load range e. I've only pulled it 130 miles since then (due to waiting for parts and fixing the damage from the blowout) but it pulls very well with the carlisles.

Wow a 34 foot trailer came with Load Range C tires, and I was considering going up to Ds for my little Jayfeather 242.

The Carlisles do seem to tow well I just hope they last.

Seems like we are seeing more truck tires on 5th wheels, only way to get a speed rated tire above 60 mph.

I had then new Carlisle's put on my RV 4 years ago.. moved up to a D instead of the C's on it from factory.. 3 blow outs already.. they go this fall...

Seann45, were the Carlisle tires you had model Radial Trail RH, or another model type? The reason I ask is that Carlisle says they have completely redesigned their ST tires from the type that was having all the excessive failures. The first redesign type was Carlisle Radial Trail RH, and the newest type is Carlisle Radial Trail HD.

If you had one of the new re-design types, I'm worried since I have the Radial Trail RH tires, which have been good for me, so far.

RH's but right now I am beginning to think they are selling snake oil.. when problems with the tire come up just make a new mold with a new designation and say NEW & IMPROVED. I phoned the company and talked to them with the weight of my trailer (loaded for a trip) air pressure settings distance and speed traveled.. they would not warranty them at all..

Wow. Not the answer I was hoping for. I'm rethinking my opinion of the "new" Carlisle ST tires. So far, my RH's are doing well with many thousands of miles. But with your experience and their denial of warranty I'm really concerned.

We OKI do hope they last but the lack of warranty means little to me, if you have ever had a road hazard claim on a car tire you will know what I mean.

I too phoned Carlisle before I bought the HDs, the guy I talked to was really excited about the new HDs saying they were much improved we will see.

I wouldn't let one persons bad experience with the Carlisle bother me. In any discussion about any particular brand of tire, there will always be one or two folks who will claim to have had nothing but bad luck with that tire. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of folks who have had great luck with said tire. As there are multiple causes for tire failure, the one or two naysayers may be causing their own failures, and not realizing it. Myself, I've had Carlisle's on both of my last two rv's, and have absolutely nothing bad to say about them. The Maxxis 8008 ST tire is also supposed to be a good tire, but cost $50 more per tire. Again, I've read about those failing too. I will say, those are the only two brands that I would consider, after countless hours of reading and researching.
The Carlisle HD also sports an M speed rating, up to 81 mph. All other ST tires that I know of are rated up to 65 mph. I don't exceed 70 mph while towing, but it is comforting to know that you could without worrying about the tires coming apart.

There must have been some significant changes in Carlisle's ST tires. I just changed tires on a 20 ft. flat bed trailer. All of the tires replaced were from 7 to 10 years old and I closely inspected them as I pulled them off and put new rubber on. They were 2 Marathons and 2 Carlisle's. Non of them were put on as a set. one Carlisle that was 8 years old and D rated was cracked up and was clearly over due for replacing. Another was 7 years old and E rated and showed no cracking what so ever. We don't use that trailer often and never over long distances, so I stretched the replacement. Don't know why but the E rated tire clearly was made from a different material that held up much better.

Tire #4 just took a dump.. the belt started coming through the tread.. These tires have never been over 65 mph good amount of tread still on them. On the way S this fall I will get a set of Maxxis .. they are not sold in Canada...

They may have held up longer due to being a 10 ply tire instead of an 8 ply. Stiffer sidewalls would surely contribute to that theory. But who knows..??

I have had excellent luck with Maxxis trailer tires. I am putting a set on my new Eagle HT that we will be picking up next week.
