Well stated Bob!!!

Slick, only thing I will add is, load up whatever you think you may have in the bed while towing as well for a trip: coolers, firewood, bikes, etc..... And actually load the coolers up.

Homer,

YW!!!

Loaded TT tongue weight = (Gross combined weight of TV/TT hitched, WDH spring bars dis-engaged) - (Gross weight of TV only) .......... as mentioned.

I had the chance to weigh our combo today with the 28BHBHE, and thought others might be interested to see the comparison. Weights are loaded for travel with full fuel and family of 5 on board (~650#).

Tow Vehicle = 2013 Chevrolet Express 3500 LT, 6.0L, 3.42
GVWR=9,600; GAWR FRT=4,300; GAWR RR=6,084
Equalizer 1400/14,000 Hitch

Travel Trailer = 2015 Jay Flight 28BHBE
GVWR=9,250; Yellow Sticker=7,064

Weigh 1: Truck with full gas and family.
Steer Axle: 3540
Drive Axle: 3540
Total: 7080

Weigh 2: Truck with TT connected, WDH bars disengaged
Steer Axle: 3140
Drive Axle: 4920
Trailer Axle: 6820
Total: 14880

Weigh 3: Truck with TT connected, WDH bars engaged
Steer Axle: 3540
Drive Axle: 4380
Trailer Axle: 6960
Total: 14880

Results:
Trailer Weight: 7800
Tongue Weight: 980 (/7640=12.5%)

I was surprised that our loaded van was as heavy as it was. Other than that, no great surprises. I dropped our tongue height 1 hole yesterday before heading out and the trailer handled better, but after remeasuring today on more level ground, I've discovered that I am now 3" lower in the front than the rear. I'm thinking I might need to raise it back up to where it was before, does anybody know how this will effect my weight distribution setup? Can I leave everything else the same and simply raise the hitch head? Or will I need to readjust bars/washers, etc? Thanks!

Mainly the only thing I can think of is how the wdh bars end up sitting when connected after you raise it. I had to readjust the tilt of my head to get my bars parallel once I changed the height. I measured the front and rear of the frame on trailer to try to get it as level as possible

It seems odd that dropping a hole made the handling better, did you have the same number of chain links on the WDH (assuming a standard setup), or did you crank it up more?
My best guess would be that you probably need to tilt the head back (more washers) instead of dropping the ball and then pull up one more link to put a bit more weight back forward. But that is just a guess.

Assuming the weights were with the dropped hitch, your front axle was the same without TT and with TT and WDH engaged; so you have that position dialled in right. If you raise the hitch, then I would tilt the head further back to pull up the same number of links.

If you lower the hitch and dont lower the bar hooks on the trailer frame, it will distribute more weight to the front axle. If you raise the hitch and dont raise the bar hooks on the trailer frame, it will distribute less weight to the front axle.

Possibly...., not all TV/TT combination suspensions and WDH's react the same. A simple single pass over the CAT scale will tell you if any adjustment is required (compare with your prior "Weigh 3" certificate). Referencing your TV's present front suspension CAT results you want to be careful not to "over compress" your TV's front suspension (transfer to much weight).

Also, refer to your TV owners manual Towing section.., some TV models don't require a full 100% "return" of the TV's front suspension fender height (minimizes potential of TV front suspension 'over compression').

Food for thought....; I've found with my TV and 30ft TT a loaded tongue weight of 15% and a slight TT 'nose down' attitude handles better, especially in less then ideal towing conditions (cross winds, sudden TV maneuvers, stops, etc.).

Bob

Thanks, that's what I was wondering. Sounds like I need to make a final adjustment and then recheck.

It's okay, I had the same thought until you corrected yourself in another discussion. Sometimes my brain gets gas too...
