Diesel fuel additive

Who runs an additive in thier diesel? I just got my truck and it has about 25000 miles on it. I don't believe the previous owner ran an additive. My brother in law is a mechanic and does lots of diesel repairs and performance upgrades and says run an additive. He recomends Standyne first then Howes. It apparantly cleans and lubes the fuel system.

I use Howes for anti-gel and lubrication. I asked the guy at the friendly local heavy duty truck parts store what the most popular was, and that is what he pointed me to.

Every tank I add 16oz of two stroke oil. This oil is designed to burn clean and it adds important lubricity property's to the fuel. Today's ultra low sulfur fuel gets stripped of lubricity in the process. I had two injectors stuck open on my truck about three years ok. When it was all said and done they replaced five injectors. Since I started using the two stroke oil, I have had no problems. I occassionly add sea foam also for cleaning. I buy the oil at Wally World by the gallon and fill a couple 16oz bottles for fill ups.

Where did you read this at. I have done a lot of reading about the two stroke oil and have never seen anybody that has had problems. If I do have problems with my DPF, I will just cut it off. My Dmax would just love the extra breathing room.:hihi:

I don't think with a 2004 truck you would have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) they were required from 2007 onward. I read this on cumminsforum.com or at least that is how I understood it. I still have some powertrain warranty left so the DPF will stay on for a little while yet. I know from reading that the 6.7 cummins engine love the extra breathing room as well.

I use Diesel Kleen from Walmart per container instructions. 1 oz for every 3 gallons.

I used to pour in two stroke oil at every fillup. Our present truck has a DPF and I don't do that any longer. None of the manufacturers recommend any additives for their diesel engines. Dealers might but the factory dosen't. I think the additives are made for a created need. How many diesel trucks are used by the military? How often do they put out bids for additives?

Agreed clutch - most of the time. I drove my 68 Chevy truck for about 80k miles on unleaded fuel. Remember the *****ing about that?

That said, I have a 2005 5.9 which was made for the diesel with the sulfer. I haven't been using additives and wonder if I should...

On my 7.3 you can hear the difference when you add 2-stroke. Much quieter. Now we are on the road I started using the Diesel Kleen instead. The diesel Kleen doesn't quiet the injectors as much but I figure it will clean the injectors as well, plus it has some cetane in it that might help a bit towing the camper haha.

The diesels of today are a lot different of yesterday. The trucks today have pumps and injectors that a human hair could screw up because the machining is so very tight to get the extreme pressures that are run. When my two injectors stuck open the mechanic tried to unstick them by putting full pump pressure to them. That was about 24,000 psi!!

I work for a Diesel fuel shop and we are The Stanadyne central distributor in our Province. The performance formula should be run in every tank. Common rail fuel systems are very very expensive to fix and are working on extremely tight tolerances. The Stanadyne additive does multiple things but the most notable is it boosts the Cetane level up to 5 points, adds lubricity to the dry low sulphur fuel, has cleaning agents to help prevent build ups and helps bring water in the fuel to suspension so your fuel filter can easily remove it before it damages your pump or injectors. You should get what a bottle costs you on a fill up back in added mileage so it really does not cost anything to run it. Lots of snake oil out there, Stanadyne is not one of them. Putting 2-stroke or ATF in any diesel with a dpf will plug it and cost you big $ to replace. That worked in old tractors and old technology, not in anything that was built in 2007 and newer.

It seems like the most important properties is the lubricant and water demulsifier. Stanadyne is expensive but seems to work.

You can use the two stroke oil in your engine. The oil will replace some of the lubrication that is lost by eliminating sulphur in the fuel. With most companies 1007 is the year that they have DPF.

I have a 7.3L excursion and have been using Lucas upper cylinder lubricant in every tank. The previous owner used it and so I just continued.

So I did abit more reading after my last post. My understanding is that the fuel manufacurers are supposed to be replacing the lubrication lost from de-sulfication in low sulfer fuel with what should be even better lubrication additives. The jist is that new the new fuels is better than the old.

For me, I'll run my 2005 CTD with 110k on it with the stuff out of the pump.

The companies may claim you do not need an additive but Ford makes their own (or has it made for them) and I use it at the recommended amounts in every tank in my 07 6.0L PSD with no DPF. no fuel related problems to date.

I have been a long time user of Dieselkleen and honestly I am not sure why doesn't seem to really do anything? I have also used 2-stroke oil as well which made my truck much quieter but, for me at least, cost some HP.

I have a 2003 F250 6.0 Powerstroke. I recently tried a product which is getting rave reviews (for 6.0's anyway) called Archoil 6200. It seems like a scam to consider that you add 3 teaspoons (half ounce) of the product to 29 gallons of fuel but that's what it calls for.

For my first dose, I added an ounce to my tank and topped off. Honestly I didn't expect to see ANY change in operation but I was very wrong. I have had this in for only 60 miles, and my 6.0 is FAR quieter, quieter than using 2-stroke. It is also smoother too. Not sure that I am seeing any benefit on power, and mileage is about the same (21-22 hwy) according to the overhead display, which actually is pretty close to hand calculated.

They also have an oil additive which I am planning on using on the next oil change. I have had great results with Rev-X, and have heard of better results with Archoil 9100.

Within just 60 miles, I notice a big difference, not in performance but drivability I am already sold on the 6200 product. I did a search, read a lot on it and there is nothing negative, a little neutral and a lot positive. The fuel additive is supposed to work well with Cummins, Duramax and us Ford guys. Cost per tank is on-par or less than the other additives.

Two stroke oil has the same BTU rating as diesel fuel so will not affect power in any way. it will not make your engine quieter but it will help lube the injection pump which is the reason that people use it in older trucks.
