I have always been well served by considering max gross weights to start with.
your gross wt rating + max gross trailer weight, has to be less then your gross combined wt rating.

in your case:
6800 + 9950 = 16750 (exceeding your GCVWR of 13500).

even the stated ratings indicate that you can either tow a rated trailer OR carry rated cargo. the numbers listed don't allow both.

6800 + 7850 = 14650 (exceeding your GCVWR of 13500).
this means that to tow a rated trailer, the truck has to be empty with only at 175# driver present.

I believed a salesman once....I don't remember weight ratings but I had a chevy avalanche with the factory tow package and the factory self leveling air bags. Salesman convinced me that I could tow a 36' bumper pull trailer with triple slides and dual bunks so we had plenty of room for all the kids. The weight of the trailer over maxed the rating for the truck empty but he told me not to worry about it, we wouldn't be adding much in the trailer and with a good weight distrubution hitch and sway control it would pull like a dream.

Long story short, I pulled the trailer 45 minutes home and it was so horrible the trailer sat in storage for 6 months until it sold. I never even hooked up to it again...and I'm one of the people that have always told the stories about pulling huge loads with zero issues. That trip taught me a lesson so when I was ready to buy a trailer this time I made sure to get a trailer my truck could handle. I couldn't be happier with my new camper now and we will get many miles of use out of it. The biggest nicest camper on the lot won't do you any good if you can't get it to the campsite safely...just my .02

How I feel about salespeople

Trust...but verify.

This should be your face when they tell you something that might sound fishy:

Salesman says the RV Warranty Forever is free... Finance Manager says I have to bring it in and pay for an inspection once a year... But I knew there was a hook in that worm somewhere........

How do you tell when a salesman is lying? His/her lips are moving.

How do you know when you got screwed by the salesman? When he is smiling when you leave the lot.

When I was looking at campers I made a joke about towing a FW with my Toyota Tacoma. He said sure it would tow it - as long as you make it off the lot....

While we were joking around I got the sense that he was half serious... As long as you make it off the lot it is no longer his problem...

We used to have people drive onto the lot with new 1/2 ton quad cabs with short boxes (they were just coming out at that time) and want to pull 36' Designer Series 5ers. When we told them they couldn't pull one they got mad and always said the car salesman told them they'd be able to tow "whatever they wanted".

Our response was always the same... "He lied".

LOL I knew my response to this thread would be "NO" by reading the title alone and nothing within it.

When the sales person gives you a price you can believe that's what he'd be happy for you to pay. That's where the trust should end.
