Dodge 1500 EcoDiesel?

Does anyone have one yet? If so, what do you think of it? I have only heard of the “Car and Driver” report, and advertizing. Just wondering how it performs while towing. Lots of chatter about Ford’s EcoBoost but noting on the EcoDiesel.

This thread on the ramforum would be of interest to you. Towed a 6000lbs dump trailer, full bed, with a Longhorn (heaviest trim) for over 4000 miles right off the lot. Sounds like it's a pretty capable little mill especially mated with the air suspension and 8 speed.

The biggest problem is low payload. It has decent HP to tow, but I wouldn't expect phenominal mileage towing a RV.

From what I've seen on this and other forums, even the guys with the big Cummins, Powerstrokes, and Duramax diesels in 3/4-1 ton trucks still only achieve 10-12mpg towing. I wouldn't expect much better with the ED.

Hey, I just made a funny...Can you imagine the stigma associated with owning a Ram with ED?

mcfarmall...lol!!

Anywho...I looked at the EcoDiesel before I bought my Ram 2500 a few months ago (even though I was buying the 2500). It was a very nice truck, 4X4 CC Laramie with 3.73 I do believe, integrated brake controller too. Loaded really for the most part...then I looked the payload. Well, it can tow a decent amount put by the time you add the tongue weight and a couple passengers, it was maxed out.

Same reason I traded my 2011 Ram 1500 CC 2WD 5.7...could tow 10,200 according to the tow guide but I couldn't get close to that number due to payload. Between the DW and I, some gear and the TT...we were at or near the payload (1226#).

Another factor...I bought my 2500 for about the same price as a 1500 5.7 or EcoDiesel when equipped the same. Now I don't worry about payload and it's a larger TV so stability will be better. I pulled plenty with my Ram 1500 over the last few years...she did an outstanding job but payload was always a factor. I'd say the EcoDiesel will be about the same other than better milage.

It's a great truck if you are doing light hauling and stuff but for a family of 4 (heck even 2 normal sized adults) it'll be on the payload in no time. Read today about the EcoDiesel when fully equipped (Long Horn Edition) the payload was 1026#s! Really? Even if it could tow the advertised 8,200 pounds, the 12% of tongue would take up most of the payload.

Final thoughts...there are plenty of folks who have 1500s and plenty who pull big trailers. The trucks are more than capable too...there is nothing wrong with the 1500 series trucks. But, for me, my money, I moved to the 2500. Gas milage will suffer for daily driving sure, but I know that. Towing won't be much better either, I know that. But I have more truck than I need now and that was my main concern.
