After this was posted I started looking for Trition trucks on the road...I haven't seen any yet..some older frontiers but not one triton...and I drove 860 miles today bringing my new Ram 3500 home..spending the night in Little Rock. Be home noonish tomorrow.
If there are any around it must be a Yankee truck only.

I think they planned this one out really well. It isn't a half ton but it isn't an HD model either (hence the XD name). By the way they're marketing it I think the pricing won't be at HD levels.

I think the problem is that it's a Titan.. Looking for a Trition or Triton would certainly get you zero results.

Sorry...spelled it wrong....did not see any of those either ...do they still make them?

I did some research. Yes they still make the Titan. Problem is they only sold 12,567 in all of 2014. With over 50,000 cities and towns in the USA only one out of every four towns will have 1 in the whole town. Pretty slim odds of ever seeing one. Like the old studebaker. Rare.
I did look up the new diesel coming out and it should increase their sales a lot. Going to be a 1/2 ton beast.

Follow up to this earlier thread. I think this test epitomizes the half ton truck phenomenon. Capable vehicles, powerful engines, payload limitations.

I'm not sure I understand the price comments between half ton and HD trucks. The half tons are not any cheaper than the ¾ or one tons. They just have the option of a much more expensive engine. Am I missing something?

The Titan XD 4x4 in the SL trim (not top of the line) has MSRP of $55k. My 4x4 Ram 3500 SLT w/ Cummins had MSRP of $58k. I don't see the value yet but I'm sure they have a target market identified.

I can't believe they didn't put an exhaust brake in.

I got curious and looked at pricing in BC Canada on the Titan diesel. The base model runs around 60k Canadian, and the top end model is listed at 73k. I did not go to the dealer and look at payload numbers, nor do that list them in the specs section online. All they list is max payload approx 2000lbs and max towing a bit over 12000lbs. It seems to me it is a diesel half ton. Pricing is steep for that kind of truck. I got my 3500HD Silverado new for 34k. Much more truck for a much better price. I can buy a LOT of gas for 30k. JMHO
Happy Camping

After watching that review, I have to say that I'm happy that we bought the 2014 F150 3.5L EcoBoost instead of waiting a couple months for the 2016 Titan. We saved a ton of money and it pulls like a dream.

Resurrecting this post since we just traded in our 2007 Nissan Titan for a 2017 Nissan Titan XD CTD 4x4 to tow a 2017 Jay Feather 23BHM.

Still breaking in the truck but on the one trip we've towed it's night and day compared to the old one. Climbing WB on Hwy 58 up to Tehachapi (4,000') from Bakersfield was a cakewalk for CTD, the old gasser would have worked much harder just to keep up with the semis.

Very happy with the potential the truck has for our needs. A couple more trips still planned and we'll see if there's improvement as the truck continues to break in.

My wife is kicking around selling her Ram 1500 soon. We are kicking around the idea of an XD as a potential candidate.

I'll be interested to see your impressions once you get a few miles on it.

I've had mine a year now and love it. Think I have 15,000 miles on it. Makes towing a lot more comfortable

That's good to hear. She averages approx 16K per year, so it would be right in line with your usage.

We tow with my Ram 2500 primarily, but it would be nice to add one more diesel to the stable when the time comes to purchase her another truck.

After two trips (500 & 300 Miles), our 2107 Titan XD 5.0 CTD definitely filled the need for more than our old 1/2 ton Titan.

We’re only towing half the rated capacity of 12K pounds and it does so easily and could definitely handle more. On our way home today, we traveled an extra 20 miles to climb Cuesta Grade (7%) on 101N. The XD handled it comfortably in 4th @ 50mph.

The strong headwinds coming up the Salinas Valley were nonexistent today and I was able to set cruise control @ 65mph and motored along at just under 2000rpm.

There is no exhaust brake but in Tow mode there is engine/transmission braking which is quite effective. I set the factory brake controller once and stopping has not been an issue.

The XD with the trailer behind is very stable even in wind and doesn’t budge when the occasional semi passes. With the WDH the truck and trailer are level.

We averaged 11.5mpg on this 300 mile trip cruising between 60-65mph. That makes me happy since we’re a long way from completely breaking in the truck (2100 miles).

Nissan definitely hit the mark for our towing needs. I also find it comfortable and easy to drive when not towing.

11.5 is pretty good, be interesting to watch them change the design to gain some looks.

Nissan or Chrysler/ Fiat -- Datson or Dodge--- Titan or Ram--- they are all close to being the same , I believe the 2 of them the are built at the same factory, so as I have said in the past which color do you like the best. Larry
