Electric Brakes

Ok new to towing a Travel Trailer. Jay Flight 25RKS at 5800 pounds dry so not much weight at all. I have pulled many flatbed and goose-neck trailers but 1) the brakes typically did not work or 2) we were able to handle the load just fine without them. I have hauled over 10k many times but just do not have the experience with electric brakes. Most of the hauling is on a ranch or back FM roads. Can anyone offer some suggestion on setting them up? New Trailer and I want to be as safe as possible.

My tow vehicle is 2009 Ford F250 with a 6.4 Diesel. Electric Brake control is factory.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I set mine as low as i can while driving in town or stop and go traffic. When on the freeway i set them to Max for any panic stop that might be necessary. Hope this helps

I set mine when I hook up the trailer, then I hit the brakes few times to adjust it and to make sure it won't pull the truck, then on the road I go. I do have a smaller trailer.

I adjust mine to make sure that I can feel the brakes on the trailer working a little....I dont want it to be extra work on the breaks of the truck but dont want to have the camper doing all the breaking either.

I get the rig rolling in neutral, probably 3 to 5 MPH and manually operate the brakes. I want it just short of a skidding stop. Other than that just by gut feeling,I definatly want to feel the brakes engage. I back off for wet or gravel roads.

I take this approach as well.

I am too setup similarly to Slabat. I have found when I first hook up, and the TT brakes are cold they may be very grippy at first, and feel as I have them set over sensitive. I found if I manual engage the brakes as I am pulling out, it seems to warm up the brakes and remove any “surface rust” on the them, and they work better. After a mile or two it seems like the brakes settle in and react as expected.

It is important that the TT is stopping you and not the TV. If the TV is doing most of the work your front brakes will overheat and possibly fail.

When we purchased our TT, the last thing the dealer did in our PDI was to discuss and check the brake sensitivity as we pulled out.

Great information. The dealer did not discuss the brakes or even assist with the hook up. Thank you to all that replied.
