Engine knock/rattle........

I have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD with a 6.0L gas engine. Upon start-up either hot or cold the engine has knock / rattle for 1-2 minutes. After that the engine is quiet. Otherwise the engine has plenty of power and runs great.
Anyone else experience this ?

Thanks,
RB

Perhaps an oiling issue. Oil galleries getting blocked? Do you have an oil pressure gauge? Like North suggests could be piston slap. Maybe lifters or valve train waiting for oil. How about your oil level? MANY years ago a friend had noisy startups, came down to low oil level. Stick read "full" but the stop on the stick had broken and it would go deeper into the sump and show plenty of oil.

Mine does that but I'd describe it as a quiet tapping, not a knock. If you have heard a lifter going bad, that's kind of what piston slap sounds like. I've heard some people have good luck running full synthetic to quiet the slap but it's not in my budget. If you have doubts it's piston slap, get a few opinions from some local mechanics.

That is a completely normal noise. Mine has done it since new, I now have 220,000 miles with no problems.
I always let my vehicles warm up at least a few minutes before driving.

Check your oil for antifreeze and your antifreeze for oil. GM motors since the 90's are notorious for head gasket failures leading to antifreeze in the oil and engine failures. I have a friend who just lost a 6.0L to it, we had a 1999 3500 with 5.7L that went thru 2 engines for that problems and my parents had a Buick Lucerne that had the 3.6 that they traded 3yrs old because it was using antifreeze.

Perhaps a lifter issue. What oil do you run? Only when cold? Does it do it at every start warm or cold? Next oil change run a lower weight oil at cold and the same weight at hot temps like a synthetic and see if it clears up.

Search the chevy forums for like issues and you might find a more concise solution.

Some rattle worse than others. I bet it sounds kind of like someone tapping the side of the engine block with a hollow hammer? This is a very normal condition in most modern vehicles. Pistons have to have what are called skirts on them to keep them from turning on end in the cylinder. Basicly what you are hearing are the skirts tapping the cylinder walls until the piston warms up enough to expand and fill in the gap. Back in the day, pistons were produced with longer skirts to keep this noise from happening, but today, every once is cut that is not necessary from an engine to keep them light and efficiant. For a while (GM I know for a fact) in the early 00's GM was putting Tefflon coated skirts on the pistons in some of the 6 cylinders to try and make the noise go away, but was for the most part unsecessful.

As long as the noise is going away with in a few minutes of start up, you are fine. If you noitice a knocking noise and also very low oil pressure reading on the gauge, you have bigger problems. You likely will drive that truck 100's of thousands of miles as is. My Tahoe (which has the 5.3) does the same thing and it has 224000 miles on it. The 5.3 is pretty much the same engine, just smaller bore in the cylinders.

All this being said, if it helps reassure you, I am an ASE certified mechanic and used to work at a GM dealership...

My 02 Avalanche had it. They claim Piston slap and normal. In other words, their poor fitting engine parts is something you have to live with. Since I am a glutton for punishment, I traded in for an 03 !!

That's about the right year model for the piston skirt noise. GM had a huge issue with that. It is caused by pistons with short skirts rocking in the cylinder. GM's solution with later models was to coat the piston skirts. It was never considered a durability issue, just an annoyance. If I remember correctly, GM even extended the warranties on those trucks to try to appease the customers.

You might play around with different lubricants to see if they'll make the noise go away. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

We had an '04 Tahoe with a 4.8 that had the same noise.

Without hearing it I would lean towards lifters. Especially if it goes away. ESPECIALLY If they are hydraulic lifters. Oil has to get there from the pan. Is it worse after sitting for a few days or is it every single time? Like someone else suggested, easy first fix is check oil level. Check your oil pressure. Should be around 60 psi or slightly higher when cold. Should drop about 10 psi when warm. If your not making this something is clogged. Double check for precise numbers for your engine but these are General pressures.

Larger diesels are actually pre lubed before starting for this very reason
