Engine Swap

I have a 04 silverado with a 5.3 / L60E with 223,000 miles i have acess to a 6.0 / L80E from a 2500 chevy - i will rebuild them before installation but was wondering if the emission, ECM etc will all work with the 6.0? or do i need to change them - anyone do this or seen it done?

Thanks
Bill

I can`t answer your question but how has your 5.3 treated you over those 223,000 miles? Is it still running good? Use much oil? I have one same year but only 105,000 miles, so far so good. My only problem with the truck has been the instrument cluster. Sometimes the speedometer says I`m going 120 mph! Sometimes zero when I`m doing 60!

Inbski3- yes...you will need the entire wiring harness and ecm/pcm from the donor truck. This can be a major pita to remove, rewire, and install in place of your old one.
A better option (just my opinion) is to rebulid your 5.3 and hop it up to suit your power needs. There are lots of bolt-ons that will provide reliable computer-friendly power without the hassle of a complete drivetrain swap.
Your exsisting engine/tranny once rebuilt/refreshed will drop right back in- no guesswork or fabrication.

Lee,

I believe GM had trouble with some of their large Truck/SUV instrument panels during model years 2003 thru 2005 and had to make repairs. Something to do with the analog hardware, and there was a class action settlement against GM on the problem.

Bob, I got a letter from GM sometime ago about that. Their oh so generous offer was to up the warranty on the speedometer to 70,000 miles, which I had already exceeded. Not only does it act up from time to time, but there is a power drain in the cluster. If I park the truck for several days the battery will die unless I remove the fuse to the cluster. The answer is to rebuild the cluster, but putting it off of course.

Send it to US Speedo.. They replaced all my stepper motors 18 months ago AND prettied up the dash face for less than GM wanted for a stock replacement.

Small power gains can be had with CAI (cold air intake) kits and cat-back exhaust systems. A power programmer can always be a plus with infinite adjustability (spark & fuel curves/shift points/octane changes) or go full bore with a supercharger (Big $$ here) system for the biggest on-demand gains and provide good daily driver manners. All of these hop-up goodies are bolt on parts that provide power gains that can be added to each other if the gains aren't enough.

But, with the mileage on your driveline, a good rebuild of the long block and tranny would be a good idea if you're going the supercharger route. A tired engine and forced induction will be a disaster.

Intake kits and exhaust systems are the least expensive route but also provide the least gains. The power programmer (of which there are several) would be the next step to maximize the intake and exhaust mods and to fine-tune them for best results. The combination of the three would probably net you good seat-of-the-pants HP to get the extra 'ummph' for pulling and still keep good daily-driver attributes.

If money is no object, well hell- just go down the drag shop and tellem' you want a 454 with dual quad carbs on a riser with a BDS 671 blower...

Sounds like a good idea. I have also seen cluster rebuilders on EBAY. Of course you have to send your cluster off to be rebuilt and drive around without one for a week or so!

Yeah but this is mild compared to the litany of misery and problems I had with my last Ford. It was a truck I ordered, an F250 XLT with a 351, built in Norfolk. But that was many years ago. Its a crapshoot I suppose with any of them.
