Mind you...you MUST replace front and rear ring and pinions. (If it's a 4X4)

I can only speak for myself and what I researched on the F150 forums when ordering our 2012 F150. I ordered the 3.73 gear ratio, based what they had to say on the F150 forums. The major complaint was gear hopping while on the highway when they came upon a slight incline with the 3.42/3.55 gear ratios. With the 3.73, I can drive with cruse on (62MPH w/tow haul mode) and the only time it will drop a gear (6 > 5) is when I am well into a major incline. The engine is right around 1,700 RPMs at 62MPH. It performed GREAT in the Colorado mountains with 6 and 7% inclines.

I had a 2WD 2007 Expedition EL with 3.73's for over 2 years and towed our X19H a few thousand miles with it. Prior to buying I did the same research you are and determined I wanted an '07 or later EL for the extra space, longer wheel base, 6 speed Trans and the bonus was they came standard with the 3.73's so no hunting for one ordered with 3.73's.

Mine did not come from the factory with the MAX Tow package but the previous owner had already had a factory 7 Pin plug and Trailer Brake installed. After researching what else came with the package I did order and install myself the upgraded tranny cooler but to be honest it was barely bigger than the stock one, the only other thing was a slightly larger radiator but that never posed me any problems. I purchased a Scan Gauge 2 and monitored the Water and Tranny temp as well as the Tranny slip and I never had any issues. The truck had 100,000 miles on it went I bought it and I put 70,000 miles on it, I changed the Oil every 5k, at around 150,000 I changed the Tranny fluid, put new rotors and pads all the way around myself and had my local shop install new struts and shocks I brought him. The frame was built super strong and the springs were so stout they broke the spring compressor when they changed the rear shocks. I was very impressed with it and always felt good towing with it with the 3.73's.

This summer mine was totaled, not my fault, which really disappointed me and I liked it so much I was going down the path of getting another '08 to '10 Expedition EL 4WD with MAX Tow but we decided to upgrade on camper size to larger than I felt comfortable towing with the Expedition so made the decision to upgrade Truck size.

My 4WD F250 is a machine but I miss my Expedition. Good luck with your search... my suggestion would be go for a 4WD EL with MAX Tow which will have the 3.73's as standard.

We have a 2004 4X2 Expedition with Heavy Duty tow and 3.73 gears. Our trailer is the X254 which is almost exactly the same specs as yours. We towed with it a couple of times and ended up upgrading to a 3/4 ton Excursion with 4.30 gears for a couple of reasons.

We have 6 passengers and it was tight and we were over our rawr with only passengers and 2 dogs back there. No gear in car.

The rear sagging was bad no matter how we adjusted the weight distribution hitch.

It struggled up grades but was fine on flat. I can't explain gear switching as my DH was the driver but I can ask him.

This poor performance may have just been from our particular situation with more passengers so if you only had 2-4 people in car you may be better off than we were.

P.s. Our Expedition is for sale. 😉

DW's car is a 2011 Expedition EL and I would hesitate pulling a trailer north of 6K with it in hills. IMHO I think 3.73 would be a minimum gear ratio to haul that kind of weight effectively. We used it without towing in the mountains for skiing and I regularly use the tow haul mode to help with shifting and braking on the down slopes. When loaded with gear and the family it winds up getting over the top of some grades.

Just my opinion and I guess the difference in feeling between my TV.

Good luck.
