Extended mirrors??

We are picking up our 23b jay feather this week.. I will be towing it with a traverse that has the factory installed tow package (rated at 5,200 pounds)

Question... Can I see enough behind me to switch lanes without extended mirrors?

I am a nervous wreck!!!

I'm surprized the tow package didn't come with "extendable " mirrors, but to answer your question, NO you can't see what you need to. I believe N.H. has a law pertaining to that and there is a fine. Larry

Hi Campergirl and welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum!!
I have never been in a Traverse and cannot tell you about the view from the mirrors. That trailer is wider than the Traverse, so your view will be different with the trailer connected. Chances are you will be able to see the lane next to you. Seeing along the trailer and a bit behind the trailer is the ideal set up.
This will be a "Trial by Error" test for you to determine what works best for you. My guess is that you will end up with extended mirrors of some kind. Once you have the trailer connected, sit inside and adjust your mirrors and determine if the view you see is what you like. If not, ask the dealer (assuming it's from a dealer), ask if you can try extended mirror on one side or the other to compare.
GOOD LUCK and enjoy your 23B!!

Hi Campergirl - picking up our 23b this week as well (tonight in fact). We are just bringing it home (very rural area) tonight, but will be purchasing trailer mirrors before we take it camping next weekend. This is what we're looking at (maybe someone will chime in if they have an idea as to which is better and help us both out!)

If you can get a slip on style mirror like the second one on your post, go with those. Typically the slip on style are only made to fit common 1/2-3/4 ton trucks. I have a 4-runner and had to settle with the universal strap on style, similar to the first ones in your post. They work, but vibrate a lot, I would suspect the slip on ones would not do that. Enjoy your new trailer.

Campergirl, wife and I have a Saturn Outlook, same as your Traverse, no you cannot see to change lanes, and I was never able to find slip on mirrors for us so I got a set of universal mirrors from advance auto. I got the more expensive ones because they have a very nice ratcheting adjustor that lets you get it as tight as you need and gives you better vision for lane changes, etc. Congrats on the new camper, good luck and happy camping.

The best removable tow mirrors I've tried were McKesh mirrors. Fully adjustable. Easy on and off. Mine are 11 years old and would still be using them if my new truck did not come with extendable camper mirrors.

I have these mirrors and no longer need them as I now own an F150 with the tow package. They are in Tewksbury, MA if that helps you. Not sure where you are located. Make me an offer and there yours!

X2 on the McKesh mirrors. Well worth the price. Get the convex mirror option too.

Whew... Another thing to buy!!! I wonder what would be cheaper.. The rv store or an auto parts store??? I can stop by the auto store in the way and ask! My husband is working tomorrow, I have to tow it,. I always drove with the pop up, but that was only 10 feet!!!
Wish me luck and thanks everyone!!!

Yes you do want mirror extensions. I use Aearo mirrors. I like them there is very little to no vibration and you can make them reach way out there.

We bought CIPA mirror extenders from Camper World. Haven't regretted them since!

Yes, you will need mirror extensions. I tow a Jayco X213 with my Traverse, and I bought the clip on mirrors made by Reese. I got them at Wal-Mart. They work really well. Find slip on ones is impossible, because the Lambda's (Acadia, Traverse, Outlook) have wonky mirror shape. Also, with the Reese ones I bought, you can still see the turn signal on the mirror. Good luck with your trailer. We love our Traverse for towing. It's not diesel, but it holds its own. Come over to the Traverseforum.com for any towing tips. I also installed a scanguage 2 to monitor my transmission temps.

We have used CIPA mirrors in the past. They are shaped for your specific vehicle and fit very well. If they don't stay adjusted you can push some foam into the cavity behind the mirrors and they will stay adjusted better.

Our's didn't either. Worst yet! I saw 2500 Ram diesel last weekend withouth tow mirrors? Really? What the heck is a 3/4 ton truck for if not for towing?? Tow mirrors should be standard!

My wife owns the Traverse with a "towing package" as well - we don't tow with it - and it did not come with anything other than standard sized tow mirrors. I know I wouldn't want to tow with them and rely on them for lane changes, etc. As others have suggested, I think some aftermarket mirrors will be a must for you. It will just be a matter of deciding which ones to buy.

I bought these mirrors http://www.etrailer.com/Mirrors/CIPA/11650.html for my KJ for towing a 24' TT. Here is my review from etrailer.com.

I installed these mirrors as well as Cipa 5" spot mirrors for towing a travel trailer with my Jeep Liberty CRD. Setup was pretty straight forward. Because I was also attaching the spot mirrors, I bought a longer bolt to hold the mirror head to the arm. I was not comfortable with the amount of threads after going through additional brackets. Going down the road, vibration was minimal and I felt 100% confident in the setup. I had no problems passing other vehicles and merging in traffic. 2 things keep this from being a 5 star product. 1st, tightening the strap on the drivers side is a bit hard because the T-handle is not reversible. The OEM mirror is in the way. Luckily, on my Jeep, the mirror also folds forward to make it a little easier to get to. I would suggest that Cipa use a removable T-handle with a 1/4" square on either end of the assemble so that you can tighten from either side, or use a 1/4" ratchet if you misplace the T-handle. The other thing that keeps this from 5 stars is the mirror head. I feel that it is cheaply made. I notice when adjusting, the bottom of the mirror head would flex where the bolt threads into the head. I found that to adjust the mirror head vertically, I would have to cup the back of the mirror, holding both the top and bottom, as not to flex the head. All in all, this is a great product, and after the initial setup and adjustment, these mirrors come on and off in minutes.

If my mirror heads ever break, I am going to look for ones off a 80's to 90's Ford F series. I believe they are slightly bigger and a lot better made.

One way or another, for safety's sake, you really need mirrors that allow you to see down the sides of the trailer, so that small vehicles cannot "sneak" up on you in your blind spot. I know extended mirrors are an extra expense, but compare their cost to the cost of a potential accident. And peace of mind is priceless.
