Thumbs up F150 to F250 Had to!

Well I took the new TT over the hill last weekend from Vegas to Bakersfield. It was very hard on the motor and the tranny (shifting?). I really wanted to keep our F150 but I learned it just wouldnt pull the 29' Eagle. Sooo, picked up the new F250 deisel last night. Love the truck! Will test it on the same trip in a couple weeks.
Happy Camping

You made a good move. With a 29ft trailer you need a 3/4 ton truck.

Not exactly true. He has the RES model- which is at least 7300lbs- which is heavier than my 33' long 6500lb 303RKS. My 1/2 ton pulls is beautifully. BUT......I would sure love to pull it with a 3/4 ton to see what all the fuss is about!

jeffsr1999:

Congratulations and welcome to the no-spark plug world! You will absolutely love the power/torque that the turbo diesel gives you. With a good WD hitch for smooth tracking/sway, you won't even know that your TT is back there.

Other forums have the GVWR/GCVWR police who can give you specifics. RV salesman will always tell you that you can handle any TT on their lot, especially "if you just add some air bag suspension." With your 29RES having a GVWR of 9200 lbs, you were definitely getting toward the upper limits of a typical F150 crew cab (as per trailerlife and fleet.ford towing charts).

I traded in my Dodge 1500 QC Hemi for my 2008 F250 6.4 PowerStroke, since I knew I would not have the towing/stopping capacity for the 32BHDS floorplan which DW loved. No regrets. Love the power and solid feeling at highway speeds from my F250 (no white knuckles). Plus, I don't have to worry about being passed by a Prius while towing up hills.

Happy Camping!

All good points fellow campers! Now I just cant wait to tow without the white knuckles! I was maxed with all the numbers and it was just a little too scary. I didnt buy the camper for that feeling.....

I have to agree with WestTXMed on this one... depending on the towing capabilities of your 1/2 ton (see our sig) and the gvwr on your 29' (loaded ours weighs about 6900+ lbs), and having a wdh/stabilizing system that works well with the set-up, it is possible to tow a 29'.

The one thing I keep saying to anyone with the 1/2 ton, you WILL bog down on the steep and long grades (ours usually goes 45mph without maxing the rpms). Our truck does have the tow/haul mode which assists with the braking on the downhill side also. For that reason, even with our engine size/towiing capabilities, we would NEVER choose a trailer -heavier- than the one we have now.

However, the other thing we say to anyone who has the means/$$ to go 3/4 ton, DO IT! You will be happier on the grades and ready to upgrade should the opportunity arrise! If we ever upgrade to a larger tt/5'er, without a doubt, it would only happen if we could also purchase a 3/4 ton -anything-!

We made the move from a 150 to a 250 last month as well. So far, I love my truck. Haven't towed the TT more than 8 miles so far so I can't really comment on that. However, those 8 miles were a tell-tale sign of what's to come. this truck has TONS of power/torque to get the job done. We are going camping this coming weekend, so I will let you know how the truck did as far as how it handled and MPG.

Good luck with your new truck.

I put a few pics of it in the "Pics of your tow vehicle" thread. I love the color combo. Interior is nice as well.

You're right, however, I can't bring myself to buy a Dodge. Always been a Ford guy and always will be. Don't get me wrong, Dodge makes a great truck and the Cummins is just about bullet proof, just can't do it.
