First Post- just need towing confirmation

Hi-
I'm buying a 2009 Jay Feather EXP 19H withe a WDH from a private seller and I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. I've looked at other postings about this vehicle and don't see much with this weight ratio.

My 4Runner is rated for 5000 lbs
The X19H
Unloaded vehicle weight (lbs.) 3,620
Hitch weight (lbs.) 405
Gross vehicle weight (lbs.) 4,950
Cargo carrying capacity (lbs.) 1,330

Passenger weight- 400lbs (just my wife, 5 year old daughter and me).

That leaves 900 or so lbs for cargo and that's maxing it out.

Sounds like I may need another TV?

Appreciate your thoughts

MJ

If your truck is still in good shape it should do fine. Depends mostly on what sort of towing you plan to do. If you just do short trips to local parks then no worries.
If you plan long cross country trips you might find it less then idea. Same if you do mountain driving. Almost every road out of town has a mountain pass on it for me. That's why I went for overkill. Otherwise I would have stuck with my old Grand Cherokee.

Welcome to the JOF

You will probably get by with this combination.

Check the stickys at the top of this section about weighing your vehicle at a CAT
scale. The tongue on your trailer will suck up a lot of the weight allowance of your 4Runner; probably about #500 when the trailer is loaded.

You will receive plenty of good suggestions here!

I say go for it! The Toyota seems like an adequate TV to get you started. You can always go bigger if you want in the future.

Welcome to JOF

The 2009 19H (GVWR 4,950lbs, as you mentioned) will have a heavier "as shipped" UVW then the published UVW of 3,620lbs. The actual UVW (as shipped) should be noted on the yellow sticker on the outside of the HTT, or on a document attached to an inside cabinet door. I would assume the actual UVW will be close to 3,900lbs.

A moderately loaded 19H would be around 4,500lbs ((3,900lbs + 600lbs (empty tanks)), and with a recommended loaded tongue weight range of 13% to 15% = 585lbs to 675lbs. If you tow with water in the fresh water tank, your HTT weights will of course increase. Confirm the WD Mode weight limit on your 4Runners receiver hitch as well.

As mentioned, the loaded tongue weight is subtracted for the 4Runners payload capacity, as well as the 50lb WDH.

IMO your 4Runner will most likely be max'd out once loaded and hitched...., but that doesn't mean it's not doable....., just depends on your towing expectations. You stated the the 4Runner has a Tow Rating of 5,000lbs, please note that the "actual" tow rating may be less.

Actual Tow Rating: http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3866

I highly recommend that you visit a CAT scale once you have the TV/HTT under loaded conditions, that way you will know where you stand.

Hopefully this information provides a little insight on what to watch out for.

Bob

2x for the CAT scale, it is your friend. As pointed out your Toyota may do a credible job so you may be able to put off trading up the TV. I expect you will be close to maxing out the weights. AS Rustic suggests, make sure the receiver is up to the task in addition to the weight on the axles.

I expect you will be pedal to the metal all the time and would bet that you upgrade after the first trip over 100 miles..

You have 180 or so HP and about 210 pounds torque.

I think you will be OK to tow with what you have. If you are uncomfortable you will start shopping for a different truck.
