Ford F-150 OEM transmission cooler

Hello JOF Community,

I drive a 2014 Ford F-150 Super Cab with a 5.0 V-8 and 3.55 gears, our new TT has a dry weight of 4,600 lbs. and a loaded potential weight of 6,500 lbs. It has a tow package, but I am curious to learn if any F-150 owners in this community recommend a transmission cooler upgrade. I live in Illinois, we do most of our camping in Wisconsin, to no extreme hilly driving is expected. Your thoughts???

I don't have a Ford but it doesn't matter. If you don't have one I would always add one. It will not hurt your transmission life only help it.

Do you have a means of monitoring the trans temps? It is good to keep an eye on them on hot days.

My truck does have a tow package, but not the max tow package. It does have a cooler and there is a transmission temperature gauge that I do pay attention to when we towed our popup. I just wanted to learn if anyone with a similar TV thought adding a larger transmission cooler was necessary.

Looks like the trans lines coming off the trans are same if it has a cooler or not. I guess you'd just be adding the cooler and the two lines coming off of it. I'm pretty sure you have the 6R80 trans and not the 4R70W. Which means there are two different radiators, depending on it's package (standard or super cooling). I'd look into an aftermarket external cooler.

I might not need it, but it is good insurance just in case. I am curious to know if Ford makes an upgraded cooler that adapts to the tubing already in place?

Keep in mind that these F-150 trannys run hotter than expected by design. I usually sit around 90-95*C when towing and have hit 100* before. Apparently that's normal for these trucks. Heck, it even runs 88*C unloaded cruising on the highway. I have the MaxTow which is the larger cooler and tow approximately 7,000lb.

Nah, Ford doesn't. We usually send them out to be done through an aftermarket supplier.

Definitely not the 4r70w, it's deffiniy the 6r80. Also, look into a tru cool trans cooler, we put one inline with the factory cooler in my parents f250, with 7.3 and 4r100, it dropped trans temps from 195-205 down to 160-170. One if the best options, very efficient and doesn't have restricted flow, no pressure drips in there system

If you don't install a cooler, you could just have the atf changed more often to keep fresher fluid in the system.
