Ford Trucks 62 MPG?

Hope they can do it, as can the others. Ford has a bit of an edge with financing their R&D with the $5 billion in Department of Energy loan money they have access to. I am not sure how much they borrowed against it so far, but it is rumored to be around $2 billion. Hopefully since it's DOE money (Our money), they can share some of the R&D results on what does and does not work.

And I hope they improve the quality. Ford has not had a good diesel engine since the 7.3 went away!

It might get 62 MPG going down hill but I have my doubts on the towing capbility of it. That would be more than Tripling the capability in less than 15 years. When has that ever happened. Remember the word "extension" somewhere around 2022 or so. Right now there is not a car that is sold commercially that gets that kind of mileage let alone a full size truck to tow several thousand pounds. Do not see it.

Maybe a thermodynamics engineer could enlighten us, but I think the problem with 62MPG pulling a trailer is going to be the raw energy content of the fuel. With the energy required to accelerate the load and to keep it going against wind resistance and inclines, I'll bet that a gallon of fuel just does not have enough energy in to get all that accomplished over a distance of 62 miles.
Perhaps we could buy a lightweight inflatable trailer composed of hot air and insubstantial plastic. But wait... that couldn't get the job done. Oh, well, we could just hope. At least it would be a change.

Of course they'll be able to do it. But the trade off will be a vehicle that will not have the ability to tow anything like we have now, and the technology required will mean the mechanics won't repair, but replace the drivetrain as a complete assembly if something goes wrong. The mechanics will have to obtain a college degree to even work on a vehicle.
It's a pity that the environmental lobby and the current stable of politicians believe that if they make a law, that law will trump the laws of physics.
