Ford vs dodge

I have no dog in this hunt. Don't own a truck. Just found this interesting. Things may have changed since then.

Supposedly the new Super Duty frame is much stronger. Ridiculously strong now.

I've seen that video and dismiss it. How many trucks actually get in that position. In the almost 5 years I've owned my F-250 it has never been close to twisting like that and probably never will.

Do you go hunting or off-road? The areas hunt in Oregon have situations like this all the time. My F350 was horrible in these conditions, I swore the frame was going to break sometimes.

I used to hunt but don't anymore. I use the truck to tow our camper/boat, which it does extremely well. There's no way I'm taking my then/or now $48,000 truck off roading for fun but it has seen some gnarly back roads. I used to have an old Chevy C-10 and it was fun beating the crap out it but it didn't cost much. I spent a lot of time in the WA, OR, ID area and a big part of me wishes I was still there. Unparalleled fishing, which is my true passion.

I went with the product that gave me the better deal! I test drove all 3 and ended up with a Ram twice now. I just purchased (pick up tomorrow) a '16 Ram 3500 dually because I got $19k off MSRP. I could only get the Ford $8k and GM $7,500 off the MSRP. I went with the best deal I could get and couldn't be happier.

There are those who might see that as a positive... keeping the driving wheels on the ground for better traction in rough going.

I love my F350 and despite the fact that the Cummins ISB is the best mid size diesel out there, I'm still leery of Chrysler products for their age old issues: fit and finish, corrosion and transmissions...though it seems the new Aisin has solved the tranny issue.

99% of the time I'm driving/towing/plowing on paved roads. I've had my 350 off road in some pretty extreme situations and have never noticed frame flex, but then again I've been inside the truck. I would assume it's exaggerated by a long bed and again by a dually. I guess in my mind, the issue isn't an issue for me so I'll buy a Ford again.

I owned a 2004 F-250 with a 6.0 powerstroke. The pickup was a very nice pickup but the 6.0 was pure garbage. I sold it and bought a 2008 Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins and have had absolutely no mechanical issues. I have heard the new power strokes are much improved but after the experiences I had I have no desire to even consider a ford again since my Ram has taken such good care of me.

I watched a video the other day between the 2014 dodge and 2014 ford pulling a 14,000lb trailer up a 3 mile 7% grade. The ford 440hp beat the dodge cummins I think around 8 seconds or so. The point is though, they both performed very well and I think they are both decent trucks.

I've done it. Wasn't towing, and had a relatively light load in the truck, but I had 2 diagonal tires in the air. It was a stupid move, and I shouldn't have done it (it was an accident, I wasn't paying attention), but it still happened. I had to engage 4wd to get out. Felt like an idiot, but learned a couple valuable lessons that day.

Video is old news. The Ford guys response (right or wrong) was the flex was intentionally built in as stiffer frames have a tendency to crack after a bit of those type exercises. They claimed that's the same reason over the road trailers are bowed and will flex when loaded.

Personally I don't know but I surely won't be attempting any such maneuver.

VERY old news*. You'll find videos like these back around '06, IIRC (when I bought my Ford). Seems to me that if one brand, or the other, wanted their frames to twist more (or less), they've had about a decade to change it.

* If it's old, then it's not really 'new's. Maybe alt news.

Watch the frame of a big rig tractor when the truck is first starting to move. Those things flex like crazy.

I once got the E300 I had at the time stuck with one rear wheel in the air like that. I had to use a sheepherder jack to jack up the opposite corner and partially apply the parking brake to fake out the differential enough to get enough traction to get out. I'm too old for that that nonsense anymore.

I'm a Dodge guy, probably since birth, but they are both nice trucks. I drive a Ram 3500 now, but wouldn't be embarrassed to be driving a Ford or even, God forbid, a GMC.

The new generation of trucks are all excellent choices. It really boils down to a few minor personal requirements and which one you like the look of in your garage.

For the 2017 super duty's - 95 percent of the boxed frame is made from high-strength steel, using rails that are 1.5 inches taller, resulting in frame stiffness that is up to 24 times higher than the old frame.

I'd like to see this test done today.
