GM Dropping Extended Cab for 2014!

Apparently GM is dropping the Extended Cab model from it's 2014 MY truck line-up for the 2500HD and 3500HD, but the 2014 1500 model will have a "Double Cab" (takes the place of the Extended Cab).

The 2500HD and 3500HD won't have a "Double Cab" until the 2015 MY....., at the earliest.

I've been considering looking into a new 2014 GM 3500HD Extended Cab SRW (diesel), so now I'm looking at the 2014 Ford F-350 Super Cab SRW (diesel). My garage doesn't have adequate depth for the Crew Cab models.

Hey, Bob,

What's the difference between a "double cab" and a "crew cab", or are the terms used interchangeably? I couldn't find the answer in the article you linked to. Sometimes this stuff gets confusing. While GM's have always been known as an "extended cab", Ford has always called theirs a "Super Cab" and Dodge had "Club Cabs", but I don't think they refer to them as this any more. I think some of the rice burners might have unique names for their versions too.

The ram 1500 we just traded up to is a Quad cab. It's about 5" less leg room for the rear seats than the crew cab from what I read. They all need their own special terms.

I used to own a Toyota Tacoma Crew Cab which are known as a "Double Cabs". I believe each will have their own marketing name for them and I doubt they will ever become standardized naming conventions.

Went from a Double Cab (Tacoma) to a Supercrew (F150) to a Crew Cab (Silverado 3500HD), all 4 door crew cab types.

GM appears to be abandoning that very small market segment of folks that want an "extended cab" and NOT 4 full-size doors. I drove a 1984 Ford F150 "extended cab" because it allowed our two young children room in the back. When GM came out with their extended cab in 1991, I ordered one as soon as it was announced. (Living on a ranch, we've always had long-bed trucks because after you stick a toolbox into the bed, you now have a "short" bed. Plus, in GM's case, the long box trucks have a 34 gallon fuel tank; short beds have a 24 gallon tank; which makes a big difference when you're towing in very sparsely populated areas.) The 2011 Silverado 1/2 ton I bought in Sept. 2011 had been on the local dealer's lot since Jan. 2011; quite a long time. The 2012 GMC 3/4 ton I bought in June (yes, this year) had been on the dealer's lot since June 2012. For me, the extended cab long box truck is still manageable to drive; the few times I've driven the 4-door, LWB trucks I've thought the truck was way longer than the extended cab. ..!

In talking with the sales folks at several GM dealerships, they all said that the market for 1/2 ton trucks was in the "crew cab" variety, ie 4 full-size doors, with a short bed. Guess we'll soon see how the market responds to this downsizing for 3/4 and 1 ton trucks!

The first full sized GM extended cabs appeared on the scene in 1988. I wanted to buy one in August of 1988 but couldn't find any equipped to my liking so I ordered a 1989. I waited until almost the middle of November, 1988, for it to arrive at the dealership. initially, they came only with an eight foot bed until, I think, sometime in the spring of 1989. I remember I was miffed because I would have waited to buy the short bed had I known. My first pickup was a 1878 Ford F-150 Super Cab, but I liked the back seat better on the GMs.

My understanding is that the "Double Cab" and the "Extended Cab" are basically the same thing....., just that the "Double Cab" will be the new GM model reference because the door opens differently, and I believe it will also have a "B" pillar.

The Crew Cab remains the same size with the full rear side doors, the Double Cab will have smaller rear side doors about the size of the past Extended Cab rear side doors.

A one ton diesel SRW has been on my mind for a couple of years, but with some of the recent truck model/cab changes in the works for the 2014/2015 MY's, I'm concerned there may not be one that will fit in my standard 235" deep garage in a couple of years (don't want a standard Cab).

My "02" GM 2500HD Extended cab is 227" long, the 2014 F-350 Super Cab is 232" long, and somewhere I read that the GM "Double Cab" model will be 230" long...... so they are starting to grow in length.

On extended trips I'm towing at about 600lbs below my 2500HD's GCVWR of 16K, so I don't have any real room to grow and if my mountain trips increase I would love to have a diesel under my hood. Also, should I be in the market for a new Jayco TT in the future, I will be looking at an increase in TT ship weight of 700lbs to 1,200lbs in the model(s) I like over my existing TT.

Thanks, Bob. From your description, I get the impression that GM dumped the "suicide" door in favor of a conventional one. I think that's a smart move unless the price difference is close enough between a double cab and a crew cab that people will pay the extra cost for the crew. I never cared for the "suicide" doors and they weren't even available in full-sized Ford pick-ups until the 1997 F-150 and super duties in 1999. I had a 1978 F-150 and a 1996 F-250. Both were Super Cabs. It was a PIA, if not impossible, for anyone large or with limited mobility to access the rear seat. I'm sure the doors would have made getting in/out easier if the vehicles had come equipped with them.

As for cost, the GMC I purchased in 2009 was more than what I paid for my house back in 1976. Of course, back then, I only made $13,000 a year so, in some respects, it's all relative.

Unless something has changed, the price difference will put a lot of people in a lurch. The last time I bought a Chevy in 08, an extended cab run about 25K for a base model. To get 4 doors, you had to step up to a base of 33K for more room. There is a lot of people that can't afford this price difference.

I personally prefer 1st, the crew cab with large rear door openings and 2nd, the extended version over the double cab (B pillar with the smaller rear doors) design due to the larger opening to get things like bikes and larger items back there that needs to be kept out of the elements. There are some upcoming federal regulations that seem to be forcing the move to the latter. See link below: "Number 216A will require 100 percent compliance for every vehicle built after September 1, 2015 (model-year 2016). Trucks will have to pass more stringent safety tests. The lack of a permanent B-pillar could make passing those tests more difficult."

GM should be announcing the new HDs really, really soon! I would expect that the 2015 would be available by April. There are also some 2013s left. I would check out what is available before rushing over to the Ford dealer.

I can tell you that the interior of the 2014 1500 is wonderful, and that I really like the quietness of the Double-Cab over previous extended versions.

I haven't had any luck finding a new 2013 GM 3500HD Extended Cab/Regular Box-6 1/2ft., or a new 2013 Ford F-350 Super Cab/Short Box-6 3/4ft.

I question if GM makes a 3500HD in a Extended Cab/Regular Box-6 1/2ft ......, and don't know if GM's 2015 MY will offer a Double Cab/Regular Box in the 3500HD (under 235" in length).

Also, you are correct that there was no 3500HD in Extended Cab/Standard box config. There was a 2500HD in that configuration.

My '02' 2500HD, Extended Cab, Regular Box (6 1/2ft) ..... is 227" long.

If my memory serves me correctly, the new 2014 GM Silverado 1500, Double Cab, Regular Box (6 1/2ft) .... is 230" long.

OK, you have the standard 6.5 bed like my trucks have. There are times where I miss the 8' bed my other trucks had, but they were all regular cabs. A crew with an 8' bed would be a bit long....
