Going from 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton...what differences did you notice?
Hey everyone...I just recently upgraded from an Avalanche to a 2012 Silverado 2500HD and would like to know from those who have made the transition, what were some of the biggest differences you noticed between the two (1/2 ton and 3/4 ton) when towing?

Went from 1/2 ton Chevy Suburban to 1 ton Ford, before going from TT to 5er. What a difference. Much less sway, felt like much more control. Smoother ride, trailer not "wagging the dog" anymore. Braking was more positive as well.

Went from pulling a TT with a G20 Chevy conversion van with 350 cc engine to 3/4 ton Dodge pickup with trailer package and heavy duty springs.
Everything was more solid. I agree with tinlizzie - much less sway and much better control. Gas mileage about the same.

Did a similar upgrade from an Avalanche to an F350 Diesel Dually. Let's not forget the obvious, which is power. Then I would agree with all the above except the smoother ride. The ride firmed but was very stable and no bouncing. Unhitched it's a little bouncy but some improved shocks did help as did tires.
I did pull my previous TT a few times before making the leap to a 5'er.

Went from 1/2 ton Siverado 5.3 gasser to 3/4 Silverado Diesel. The power in the mountains is the most impressive difference. Unhitched the ride is much more "truck-like" with the 3/4, but hitched everything just feels more solid and secure. I am very pleased with my TV upgrade.

I went from a dodge ram 1500 with the 4.7 v8 to the ram 2500 with the 5.7 v8 hemi. The power is by far the biggest difference. Last time I was driving I hit 80mph and didn't even notice it til I saw the speedometer. I then slowed down of course. I do agree with the "drives more like a truck" when it is not towing. I am still very satisfied with the upgrade.

Its REALLY nice to have some springs under your rear end!
I felt like the suspension was maxed out on the 1500 with only a 1400lb payload and the relatively high tongue weight of my trailer. With the 2500 and its 3400 lb payload its night and day difference the way it feels and handles. Having owned and still owning a 1500 and a 2500 the two trucks are different animals designed to do different jobs.

I had a f150 for years and it went through hell and didn't complain, but I was tired of flooring it anticipating hills and loosing speed. Also the small things like brakes and suspension come to play. 3/4 ton trucks are made to work and 1/2 ton trucks are grocery getters that can tow on occasion.

The brakes on a 3/4 ton are a lot bigger also.

Long wheelbase contributes to the smoother ride. Although a bit trickier to park and manuever in tight spots, my crew cab with 8' bed rides smoothly even when not towing. I have ridden in F-150s that aren't as smooth as my 1 tonner.

You probably must remind yourself the trailer is attached with that TV change .HP/torgue out the wazooo and the HD has 1 ton suspension/brakes so a big safety item.
