High Trans Temp. when backing up in yard

We have a 2012 TWD Crew Cab Titian with tow package. Driven to Maine and back pulling an 8300 TT White Hawk. On long grades Trans temps raise some, but never high. Come back home and back in the yard 100 feet with a slight depression in the yard and the engine bumps up to 3500 RPM and the Trans Temp almost pegs. Once out of depression on level ground Temp gauge goes back to normal very quickly when ide ling. Will this high rpm damage the truck?

Check your fluids is this happening a lot or just the one time?

Thinking some more the long grades your transmission temp goes up slightly.but upbringing is at a much high RPM then when you are simply backing.up sounds like a weak pump or a clogged filter

When going down the road, the transmission torque converter locks up which causes the transmission to run cooler and increases gas mileage. When you are jockeying your trailer around in your yard, etc. the torque converter never locks up so a lot the energy going into the tranny from your engine is being converted to heat due to the fluid friction in the torque converter.

Think of it this way: the torque converter is a fluid coupling. Envision 2 box fans pointing at each other. When you turn one fan on the other one begins to turn due to the air flow from the first fan. A torque converter works much the same way only it uses oil instead of air. When the torque converter locks up it is like bolting the 2 fan blades together so that there is minimal energy being converted to heat.

Does that help?

x2 outofhere.

Also remember when backing up, you don't have the added benefit of air being forced through your tranny cooler (assuming you have one) except for what the engine fan can do.

i remember hearing awhile back that transmissions cant cool as efficient when it reverse so if your working them by adding a large load to the back then its possible to have them go higher

now im not sure if that is true or what but for some reason it sticks out in my head

The Titan tow package doesn't have a proper transmission cooler or auxiliary electric fan any more. I would add a transmission cooler to it, that's what I did with mine (I have a 2011 Titan 4x4) and it made a huge difference.

Never thought about the torque converter McFarmall Great explanation also don't forget to turn off your bracks when backing up. It always gets me for a moment

Do you have 4x4? If so, switch to 4 Low and your tranny will thank you.
