Jay Flight 32TSBH pulled by Ford Excursion 6.0 PSD
Does anybody have any insight on this setup? I own the Excursion, have yet to buy the TT, but I'm nervous about realistic towing capabilities.
I couldn't find a bigger TV with enough seating for my family of 6. We will be traveling on long 2-3 week cross country trips.
With the right hitch, towing set up, etc., is this realistically doable or is that a trailer more suited to be set on a seasonal site and towed infrequently?
Thanks so much for any help.

Very nice trailer but I really thing you may run into problems with payload capacity with that size trailer and your excursion.

Ted S.,
Welcome to JOF
The Ford Excursion can be a nice TV, but like any TV it also has limitations....., and one's loading habits can play into any TV's towing ability.
As you may be aware, with any TV it's "available" payload capacity is a critical element when evaluating a particular TT for purchase because a TT's "loaded" tongue weight is subtracted from a TV's "available" payload capacity.
To minimize the amount of guesswork, I would take your Excursion under loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo) and weigh it at a CAT scale (3 minute process, about $9). Subtract the CAT scale weight from the GVWR noted on your driver's door......, the remaining weight is what you have available for a TT's loaded tongue weight and the weight of an standard WDH (50lbs).
The loaded tongue weight of a TT like the 32TSBH should be 13% to 15% of the TT's actual or projected loaded weight. The 32TSBH published UVW of 7,855lbs isn't the ship weight, IMO the ship weight will be closer to 8,300lbs. If the TT is on the RV dealer's lot, refer to the yellow sticker.
For reference, the following JOF "Excursion" thread may provide some additional insight:
http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/sh...cursion&page=3
Published Tow Rating Reality: http://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3866
IMO the CAT scale visit will be an extremely helpful part of your do-diligence.
Please feel to ask for any clarifications.
Bob

I'd put a set of airbags on the Excursion to beef up the rear suspension and roll with it. I'm pulling a similarly heavy 32BHDS with an '06 F250, which has the same drivetrain as you have. Your setup is a little heavier (trailer and tow vehicle), but I wouldn't sweat it.

I've done some research and it looks like the Excursion has 11k tow capacity and 1500-1800 payload capacity. The 32TSBH weighs in at 8600 w/ options, with around 800lb tounge weight.
Somehow I thinks it's doable, with a good hitch. The million dollar question is, can I do it comfortably? I'm looking at some really long trips.
If it weren't for that huge bunkhouse, I could let this go...

Hey Ted,
Rustic has a good suggestion. We towed our X23B that weighed just over 4000# loaded with an Expedition which had a tow rating of 8000#. I was surprised to find out (by visiting the CAT scale) that we were close on the rear axle load. If you weigh the Excursion with the tribe on board you will "know" how much more cargo you can carry. Subtract the 50# for WDH will give you the max tongue weight. Divide that by 0.15 (15%) which will give you an approximate Max TT weight.
Texas' and TakeIt's suggestion of bags is also good. The bags won't increase your rear GAWR but will level things out.

Kind of a preliminary review since I have no actual numbers at this point...
Published Curb Weight = 7725 lbs
GVWR = 9200
This leaves 1475 Payload Capacity.
The tongue weight of the 32TSBH is 825 lbs, minus another 50 lbs for the hitch leaves 600 for the tribe. That's cutting it close.

What happens if the tongue weight isn't 13-15% of trailer weight to begin with? Do you move the loads around to try and get that balance?
Off the specs, the tongue weight of the 32TSBH is just 10% of the trailer weight.
I know actual weights are different...

I have a 2002 Excursion, tow a 2011 33RLDS. total weight going down road is close to 17,000 pounds. Truck weighs 7350 with full fuel, trailer weigh 9400. loaded. Put on a set of air bags and the Excursion handles it great. Doing some reading if you have the 4:30 gears you can tow more. We have the 3:73 gears.

Yes.
One of the biggest factors that can influence tongue weight is if one tows with water in the fresh water tank, because not all tanks are located in the same place (forward of axles, over axles, rear of axles, etc.).

Ted, try sending a private message to user Ranger431. He tows the 32TSBH with an Excursion. He might be able to give you a lot of insight.
