Love Bugs and Hot Stuff

I posted a couple of times in the "Count to 1 Million" thread pictures of my trailer and truck showing the results of numerous Love Bug swarms we encountered to and from Galveston last week. By actual count, I had 19403 Love Bug corpses on the front cap of the trailer and 19434 corpses on the front of my truck. I showed the damage to my son and he recommended I check for accumulation on the radiator.

The next day, I took these pictures:

Wow. I first saturated the corpse zones with a strong solution of Simple Green and let it soak. I sprayed a strong stream of water through a nozzle on a garden hose and most of the dearly departed came loose. I repeated the process, and almost all traces of our friends were gone. My concern, of course, was that the bug bodies would have restricted the flow of air through the various coolers at the front of my truck.

They do have a distinct dead bug stink.

But, when we stopped to scrape off the windshield glass a couple of times, love bugs swarmed our truck. I guess that love bugs disagree about what stinks. Of course, they don't have the sense to get out of the way of a moving Jayco.

I use a piece of screen door fabric to keep bugs out of the radiators. I use zip ties and tie them to the back of the grill.

That is a lot of bugs! Yes that would reduce the air flow across the radiator. This summer I stopped at a carwash in Custer while there to clean the radiator.

As to clean the bugs off the TV and TT, I use Spray Power (full strength). It is incredible how well it cleans streaks and bugs off the vehicles with no effort at all.

Most auto supply stores like Auto Zone sell radiator kits that are easy to put on and remove.

The first mod on every vehicle I've ever owned has been a piece of window screen draped in between the grille and the radiator/condenser/trans cooler/intercooler coils. Also prevents pebbles from bending the fins over. One of my simple forms of entertainment is to look at peoples radiators in the Wal-Mart parking lot and see how banged up and packed full of bugs they are.
