I looked at a brand new F250 XLT with FX4 package, with 6.7 diesel, lots of buying incentives right now with year end. It is still lots of money and probably more than I can justify but I still want it!!! It would sure tow my trailer well. Now to convince my wife, we need it.

Here's some logic that is sure to help. Say your new truck costs $38000. In 2011 you camped 42 nights. That would be only $904.76 per night! What a deal; if you decide to use this line of argument, be sure not to give me any credit at all.

Don and I always 'do the math together' so it's not a isolated he/she thing.

We both would like to upgrade to a double bunk (we have four grandkids who are huge part of our life). We committed to our current tt three years ago based on three grandkids. Starting next year, Hailey (newest) will be potty trained and grandparent approved to camp with us without a parent LOL We outgrew our current tt which means there is a possibilty to upgrade to either a tt/5'er that accomodates two bunk units. There is nothing about any of this (TT, 5rs, TV) that makes good financial sense. If you want it, and can afford it with out neglecting other responsibilities, just get it. Once you tow with that diesel you wont be able to get the smile off your face. :-)

My wife and I have been married for 40 years and we have always used this method for buying anything that cost over 1000 dollars, wait 30 days, and if you still feel the same about the item, and of course you can afford it, go for it. We have been amazed thru the years how things look a little different when you give yourself time to get over the initial ' I want it stage', good luck,.......happy camping1

We do the same, we know we need a new truck soon, it is just alot of money. I really don't want to buy a used one either. I would rather buy new and keep it 10 years. We will see, I know it will be safer and better to tow with we are well under the tow weight rating but very near our max GCVW rating so a 3/4 or 1 ton is raelly the only option. I am sure we can afford it, it is just so much more than we have ever paid for a vehicle before. We both love camping so it will get used.

I must be looking in the wrong place...lol All the new Ford diesel trucks I have looked at are approaching $50K. The fancier ones are encroaching on $60K here.

If you really really really want it just remember that is is easier to get forgivness than to get permission. Actually we usually talk things over and spend lots of time looking at options and often end up missing a good deal.

As the recent owner of a 2011 F250 - I would recommend you try to find a used one with low miles, it should save you ~$18k off the price of a brand new one.

agreed. ive been very hesitant to purchase something new just for the fact how much the value drops right off the bat. I'd find something 1-2 yrs old with minimal miles on it also still having some of the mfg warranty left just incase an unknown issue pops up after the purchase that you didnt notice before.

The newer Superduty's are very nice indeed. I always take note when at CG's on the new trucks and honestly the new F-series are almost silent running diesel's with very minimal diesel smell. On the other hand for me, the diesel sound is part of the enjoyment, so an older diesel is nice!

As for buying new or used - we have never bought new - always looked until we found used with low mileage that fits our criteria. For example, we found our 2003 F350 in Jan 2004 with only 10,000 miles on it, and it was like brand new, and only about 3/5 the cost of a new one. Had it now for 8 years, and our local Ford dealer has tried several times unsuccessfully to get us to trade for a new one (still looks almost new). Wife's 2007 Ford 500 Limited was bought as a "program car" with about 10,000 miles on it, again like new, and we have no regrets, and a lot of change still in our pockets. So . . . IMHO - don't knock a good used TV until you've tried one.

We are going to look for a truck, our friends offered to let us use their 04 cummins 1 ton and my wife noticed how easily it towed our trailer compared to our F150. Hills no problem, we drove I-90 in Washington which has long steady hills, we never went under 55 mph the whole way. The truck really didn't even have to work hard. She commented on how "you don't even know the trailer is back there". We might go look at a few and see if we should go new or used. We will keep it 10 years so newer is better, used diesel prices here seem to be very inflated, with alot of dealers buying trucks out of the states and listing them for near new prices. I looked at a new F250 XLT and it was $50,000, a used 06 Cummins 3500 Laramie is listed at $33,000. Just starting the shopping now, we are under no pressure or time frame to get another truck, just have to find what we like and can afford.

We just purchased a Silverado 2500 Quad Cab 4X4 Duramax/Allison about 3 weeks ago. Talking about a huge :hihi: on my face!!! Took the trailer for a 100 mile tow over a few large hills and didn't know it was back there. The RPM's stayed at 1700 when on flat and didn't move while going up the hills. I had a 2003 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 V8 and that truck would throw the RPM's to 3,500-4,000 and only do 50mph in 2nd gear up the same grades! Can't wait for our trip to Mt. Shasta.

Information only: The 04 Dodge has a 3:73 rear axle, and the new Fords have a 3:55 rear axle. There will be a small amout of difference when pulling. Also, the 04 Dodge uses a 4 speed automatic, while the newer Dodge and Fords use a 6 speed automatic. You will notice some gear shifting that you didn't have on the 04 Dodge. And, in 2004, for Dodge, there were 2 "model years" for the Cummings diesel. If I remember correctly, one is a "C Code", and the other is a "6 Code".

My 04.5 Dodge is at 95,000 miles. I bought it with 35 miles on it. I've had everything from a diesel Chevy LUV to a diesel Escort, to a Powerstroke, and now a Dodge. I even had a Ford Ranger with a diesel. A diesel is all I want to own. Whenever the wife and I go past a truck dealership, she is always looking at trucks. She thinks mine is getting old. With my wife, if you tell her it's to pull the trailer, or anything for the trailer, then her reply is "buy it."

Something to keep in mind with the Fords and GMCs diesels is the fact you have to add diesel exhaust fluid in a different tank.

Dodge, Ford and GMC all make excellent trucks. Look at all of them before you buy. I think they all now offer an exhaust brake. I think GMC is the best looking truck out there, and Ford always had the best seats, and the Dodge has been the work horse truck. To bad International doesn't make a pick-up truck anymore.

This is exactly our story with the f150!! Still looking, have to try them all and see what is best value. I like the Ford but the 6.7 worries me a little, although it is internet stories you hear.

I moved new truck purchase up 2 years friday and brought home Chevy 3500HD crew dually replacing my 03 2500HD crew.keep talking the "safety" line .The difference between the Duramax's is amazing.

Used tv like the 2011 F-350 6.7 CC SB 24K miles would have beed good for you. I paid $61K in April of 2010 they gave me $36K last month on my 2012 F-350 pretty much trhe same truck, but the new one is a LB.:hihi: I hear they sold my old one in less than 4 days for $39.9K. DId I mention there was NOTHING wrong with the 2011? Still had the new truck smell. LOL The picture on my profile is of my 2011.
